Wrong dose utrogestan
« on: December 01, 2025, 01:50:03 PM »

Hi ladies
I recently started HRT and was prescribed 50 oestrogen patch and utrogestan on the 14 days on/off cycle. I am on day 36 since starting and have just realised that I have been taking the wrong dose of utrogestan. I’ve been taking one tablet (100) rather than two. Since day 10 I’ve had terrible insomnia - fall asleep for an hour to 90 mins and then am totally wired and awake for the next 7 hours before I get up. I had been  wondering if it’s a reaction to the HRT but now that I’ve seen that I’m actually on the wrong dose I’m wondering if that’s what’s caused the really bad insomnia. Anyone else experienced this during to wrong dose? I was in a bit of a daze when reading the instructions as hadn’t been sleeping at all for months due to severe hot flushes every 30 mins (which thankfully have now eased!)

Hi

I've not experienced exactly that myself but when I was taking utrogestan (now got mirena coil) I found that taking them at bedtime, as advised, left me wired for a couple hours and unable to sleep. So I changed the timing to mid evening, couple hours before my normal bedtime and this helped me.

If you're wired for hours after you could try taking them in the morning?

Another thing is, particularly as you say you were dazed when you read the instructions, are you making sure you take on an empty stomach? Not sure if food would cause your symptoms but worth making sure you do take them correctly.

Good luck in resolving your problem

Thanks very much Suzie. Yes I was wondering about whether taking it at a different time of day may help. And yes thank you - I had forgotten about taking on an empty stomach (although I normally do take them 2 or 3 hours after dinner)

Utrogestan always negatively affects my sleep unfortunately - though I've only ever taken it vaginally -  not least because if the effect on my bladder causing me to wake up more. One of the downsides.

Taking with food actually increases the bioavailability of the progesterone so if taking less than the recommended dose and not on an empty stomach should have resulted in a bit more getting to the system!
