Postmenopause - Just started Prometrium and having a full period
« on: November 14, 2025, 04:38:48 PM »

hi all - I need advice please! I am 3.5 years post menopausal and I just started taking Prometrium (progestin) 200 mg & have been taking for only 9 days.

I am taking it for thickened endometrium lining. I am not taking any other medicine.

Yesterday I started spotting which my doctor had told me could happen. By end of day I am having a full “normal” period like I used to have. I also passed 3 blood clots (nickel size and quarter size) overnight. I have called my doctors office and the nurse that I spoke with told me to keep an eye on it and to call them if I’m filling a maxi pad every hour or go to the Emergency room.

I’m worried but trying to stay calm. I know that the purpose of taking progesterone is to thin your endometrial lining when you have a thick lining.
Note: I did have an endometrial biopsy last month which came back as fine and benign.

Any advice or comments are very much appreciated.

 :welcomemm:  R U Stateside?

How old R U and which symptom did U want to ease first?

How thickened is it suggested that your lining might be?  Hopefully some1 will be along with advice.

I’m 48 (yes I started menopause very early!) and my endometrium is 12mm.

Anyone else have issues with bleeding while taking progesterone?

Hi, I haven't got any experience with Prometrium but I have recently started Nalvee and abut ten days in I had a period-like bleed (with clots as well!) which settled after about a week or so. I am also about 3 years post-meno. I was also concerned but when I read the insert it said bleeding is usually nothing to worry about and that it is likely in the first months of taking it.

This is not a cause for concern, it is a benign side effect of progestogen treatment that you should have been advised about.

With a recent negative biopsy you have nothing to worry about.

Those with early menopause are actually at a reduced risk of endometrial cancer, however early loss of estrogen is undesirable in many other ways and it would be worth considering replacement going forward.
