Estring insertion difficulties
« on: November 11, 2025, 09:50:52 PM »

Advice needed please.
I have been given Estring to try. I read all the instructions, got myself settled and ready to go but I cannot get it in! :(

Everytime I tried the ring kept opening up and slipping. I followed the instructions, pinched the ring together got it in the entrance and then it popped open and was going all over the place but not where it should go! It was like a comedy sketch!🤣
In the end I had to stop trying as I made myself bleed. Washed it and put it back in its wrapper and will have another go in a couple of days.
It seems like my vagina has shrunk with atrophy. The ring just would not go up very far and was sticking out of my vagina like a piercing!🤣

Any suggestions...if it doesn't fit maybe I should try something else.

Anyone else had this problem?

When I was offered Estring the GP said that she could fit it for me & change it every 3months.

I don’t use it but maybe a surgery nurse would do it or a GP,

Yes I will go and ask. Just wanted to try myself rather than have to keep bothering the GP.

I think I’ve read that it might get easier once you’ve had it for a while, because if it’s working the elasticity in your vagina will get better again.

I can’t imagine getting anything like that in there either at the moment, I can hardly fit a finger (I have an appointment in less than 2 weeks to get that checked out), not sure if it is a prolapse or atrophy. However, years ago I used a cup (for a little while, couldn’t really become friends with it) and I had no difficulties getting it in. So, I think if the atrophy reverses, it makes sense that the placement will be much easier.

So, not being able to get it in now, doesn’t neccessarily mean you’ll have to go to the gp every time.

Thanks, that is encouraging. I must admit as I kept trying to push it in, it kept pushing back out and it hurt like hell. Not looking forward to the  GP trying either!😟

Your GP or Nurse Practitioner should insert this! Has any1 else had to insert DIY?

No, I can imagine not looking forward to it. I’m planning to take painkillers before my appointment, because I’m sure the investigating if I have a prolapse is going to be very uncomfortable with the atrophy I’m pretty sure I do have.

That is my recommendation, because I’m doing that myself: take painkillers beforehand.

I was just prescribed it, no one said about making an appointment to put it in so I had a go! Not a good idea for an oldie. Reading other posts it does seem to be a common thing to insert it yourself. We learn from experience, apart from the comedy aspect of me trying to shove a bouncy squidgy  ring inside a very sore and fragile part of me don't think I will do diy again.🤣

The estring is massive, a hard rubber ring like something I used to throw for my dog to fetch!

I have had vaginal deliveries and although I have vaginal stenosis now as a result of complications and poor obstetric care with my last, at no time in my life would I have been able to shove one of those up my vagina.

This is a ridiculously poor design, especially when compared to the soft, slim, flexible contraceptive Nuvaring, which I have used with no problem even though I have almost no vaginal opening and can't use tampons.

Yes I totally agree. When I was uou.g I used a diaphragm which you were measured for so it actually fitted
My eyes popped when I saw the size of.the estring.🤣

Another question is related to my now opened packet the Estring came in. I have tried to reseal it so I can try and use it later once I have got an appointment to have it fitted but does anyone know if it is still ok? How long does it last once the packet is opened before it gets inserted?

I would ask for a new one.
Something that has been opened, been on a short bouncy journey, washed and then put in a packet for a few days doesn’t sound hygienic to me to reinsert.

I wouldn't worry about it, the vagina is not a sterile cavity and most of us have had far less hygienic things up there.

I think the main issue is anatomical, as it is like trying to pass a camel through the eye of a needle.

Even a well estrogenised, parous vagina would struggle to comfortably accommodate that, and in the setting of atrophy it is likely to be traumatic to say the least and may prevent proper bladder and bowel emptying.
