So 4 1/2 weeks ago changed hrt to 100mg utrogesten daily with 1 desogestrel in case I bleed altho I’ve not bled for just over 2 months yaaay both ovaries strophic
With 75 sandrena gel which is 1.5 in 2 sachets
Been fine but last week have started having bloody reflux again after being controlled on 15mg lamsoprozole soo asked if I could double up for while to see and gp said yes for couple weeks
When previously on utro I had reflux so I don’t think it’s to do with the added desogestrel
Will it go away and go back to 15mg dose or is this part and parcel of  having in rease and it will always be?

How was your indigestion prior to beginning HRT?

As oestrogen levels drop muscles may become lax which includes the digestion i.e. hiatus hernia = reflux.  I've had reflux in various forms for years, omeprazalol helps a lot so doubling up will probably give U an idea as to what may be the causation of symptoms.  It's a nuisance ......... over the counter omeprazolol made it worse 4 me!

How long will U need to take the Desogestrel on an 'in case' basis?

Only been taking couple years lansoprozole wasn’t too bad then settles and now not
It certainly is a brimming nuisance!
Good question I don’t know I’m 53 for unsure how long desogestrel for
I tried couple days without and started a bit of staining assume that was withdrawal so carried on it

I have to swallow Milk of Magnesia liquid occasionally in the afternoon or evening.  It doesn't seem 2 make any difference to what I'm eating/drinkikng

Yes reflux is a common and well known side effect of progestogens.

Progesterone is the pregnancy hormone, makes everything slack and loose in prep for giving birth. Unfortunately this includes the valve that keeps the acid in your stomach.

Firstly I wouldn't double up on progestogens.

If you need birth control or bleed control and are taking desogestrel anyway, you can just take two of them daily (ie150mcg) and drop the micronised progesterone. This is unlicensed but supported by the BMS for endometrial protection.

If you don't need birth control, think you are postmenopausal and would prefer to use micronised progesterone then I would keep this and ditch the desogestrel.

You may get some transient withdrawal bleeding but this is not the same as your periods coming back and should quickly settle.

If not you can always restart the desogestrel.

If you're taking utro orally I would change to vaginal which usually avoids digestive upsets.

Yes, I was controlling my reflux with Gaviscon, but I need esomeprazole as well now I'm on estradiol patch.  I'm currently waiting for my progesterone to turn up ( it's out of stock) so I'm just using a quarter of an Estraderm patch.

I have the reflux from hell on it! Worse than I got on the Femseven Conti patches. It's so bad I may go back to Femseven. It was similar when I was on the gel - 1 pump was not too bad but lots more acidity on 4 pumps.

I haven't a solution other than H2 blockers or PPIs?

I know, isn't it awful? I'm taking over the counter Nexium but I need to call the GP and get back on Lansoprazole or Pantoprazole as they work better for me.

I've taken the patch off today but then it was making me feel so great. Aargh.

Why on earth would anyone go without estrogen instead of simply taking a PPi?

This is stepping over pounds to pick up pennies.

One of the potential "risks" of PPIs the daily mail screeches about is osteoporosis (no evidence of causation, PPIs are likely just a proxy for multimorbidity, polypharmacy and in some cases an unhealthy lifestyle)

I would personally be far more afraid of untreated menopause than my omeprazole, which I have taken for 20 years.

Someone said they were taking a quarter of their estradiol patch, which on the NHS is statistically unlikely to be a 100mcg patch to begin with.

This has about the same level of estradiol as a first class stamp, and any reflux on this is unlikely to be related - or may even have been triggered by a reduction in dose.

I've been on PPI's for a few years now and I am not on systemic HRT but I do take supplements to compensate for any bone issues that may occur, which I do think is important if on long term PPI's.

So far so good, I have a healthy lifestyle and I have no issues from taking them and I am very old so the Daily Mail can bugger off with their endless scare stories.
