Moisturiser advice please!
« on: September 25, 2025, 07:37:32 AM »

Hi everyone.  Well, the rare form of Candida is finally being sorted.  Culture was sensitive to Econazole which is not supposed to work on this strain but Doc said ‘it’s not an exact science’ so we will see … but a relief that after 5 months of fluconazole without success, something might now work!

anyway latest problem is itching (unrelated to the thrush).  It happens every few days. Stinging itchy feeling on the outer edge of the labia majora lips - just where the hair begins and mainly at the front where the 2 lips meet.  It’s intense! I’ve just used a tiny bit of dermovate as the standard hydrocortisone cream doesn’t do it.  It can last all day then goes for a few days.  I do put a bit of estrogen cream there too at night but was wondering what moisturiser you would recommend for these outer bits? I’m assuming it is just dryness as there’s no sign of anything else there.  I’ve tried YES VM but it only gives very temporary relief.  I use hydromol in the shower.  I just want to scratch myself to bits but don’t of course - it’s just driving me nuts so any ideas most welcome! TIA.

I had the exact thing - my GP told me ointment rather than cream is more soothing down there, I was given Eumovate Ointment(steriod) but with strict instructions on using sparingly and twice daily for 3-5 days and then the emollient for washing.

You could buy the Hydrocortisone ointment 1% from chemist and see if the ointment is more soothing.  But as steriod use a little also I would be careful not to say what it was for as they may not give it.

Glad the candida is sorted that might help with this eventually finger crossed

Thank you so much for replying.  Yes I’ll have to be careful with the steroid stuff as it was dermovate that made my vulva atrophy so much worse (it was wrongly prescribed) but one gets desperate - I think you’re right in suggesting whatever I apply I should do often as I tend to onky treat it when it happens - I forget inbetween times if all seems well!

I too am hoping that when the other skin issues are healthier then it all might improve.  I’ll get some HC ointment - thank you.

I have this also but towards my groin and perineum as well as the lips. I use Ovesse oestrogen cream but also Aveeno moisturiser the one with the colloidal oatmeal. It really soothes and heals the area following itching and it’s the only thing I have used that stops the itching daily during the day, I notice it more at night in bed x

Hi Littleclaire.  Yes I notice it more in bed - in the early hours of the morning if I wake up for the loo.  Even wee running over the skin can make it itch sometimes. I will try the Aveeno - I’m already using estrogen cream and hydromol for washing.  It’s such a fine balancing act isn’t it? Sometimes I think I’ve cracked it but then a few days later it’s all irritated and itchy again!

Just to say I too use Aveeno - even before it came out over here used to always bring some back if in USA.

I am a real aveeno baby just before I came on her the calm and restore face cream went on.   Also recently got the cleanser as never seen it before. I use the dark blue pump bottle body moisture and also but this on to feet.  Great stuff.

But they have brought a new range out called Aveeno Dermexa....more emollient and also cream....worth looking at range on Boots online.

Yes that’s exactly what it is, a balancing act trying to get it right. Some days are better than others and some not so much. I’ve put that down to hormones fluctuating and days when it’s low must be when I’m itchier and drier skin and when it’s higher the skin feels better and not so much itching. So annoying! I’ve read somewhere than Aveeno also do the bath oat sachets which are meant to be good to soothe itching, may be worth giving these a try. Are you on any other HRT as well patches/gel etc. you may need an increase in that aswell as your oestrogen cream to balance hormones a bit more x

We only have a shower so can’t add anything to bath water.  I have fibromyalgia and it’s been years since I’ve been able to get in and out of a bath!  I read up about aveeno and it says not to use in the genital area … ?

I’m on Estraderm 75 patches, vagifem and estrogen cream.  I seem to be doing well on that but persistent thrush (rare strain - C.Krusei) is a problem too so I’m not sure what’s safe to use down there at the moment.  I was on HRT in the past and never had a problem with thrush - the only difference this time is the estrogen cream which I’ve not used before.  I needed it though as all the vulval skin was damaged/thinned by wrongly prescribed dermovate ointment.

I use olive and bee, this is an ointment.  I find it soothes very well and is the only moisturizer I can use that doesnt irritate.  It certainly is a minefield and takes a long time to find what suits you best.  You will find something just keep researching and you will find the one that works for you.

Thank you jojo8765 - I have got some of that - I tried it once - I’ll give it another go.  At the time I didn’t notice any improvement but as my atrophy is recovering it might be helpful now.
