Oestrogen gel versus spray if you have pets
« on: September 20, 2025, 11:13:59 AM »

A recent blood test has showed that on Estradot 75 my oestradiol is only 83pmol/l. So I think I need to try gel or spray to see if I absorb better. I am reluctant to change from a patch as I have pets and don't want them absorbing the gel/spray from my arms so I ideally need to apply to inner thigh. Please could you advise which gel/spray are best if you need to apply to inner thigh. Thank you very much.

What type of pets and R they likely to be in contact with the areas to which you apply the oestrogen?

Do they usually lick?  Time 4 a training lesson ;-).  I think that it's more about absorption if pets cuddle up to the areas where the spray is applied.

When I had radiation treatment I was told to keep away from babies and old people and not to let the dog lay on the treated area, not that it was her space anyway. The cats were easy to push off if necessary.  Some1 asked whether I would 'glow in the dark'  ::)  :D

How often do U need to apply?

Hi Toughtimes

I used oestrogel in the past and that is recommended to be applied to the inner thighs.
Like you, I have cats and a dog so I would apply it at bedtime, keeping the pets out of the bedroom so no chance of them getting any gel on them.

I haven't tried the spray so I'm not sure if that's applied to arms or thighs.

Lenzetto can be used on the inner thighs too. When I started it, it was Summer and didn’t want to spray it on my arms (because of pets and children), so I’ve always done thighs.

However, if you don’t absorb enough from a 75 mcg patch, I recommend trying gel over spray, because from the literature, serum levels with the spray tend to get no higher than from a 37.5 mcg patch, it’s a bit weird in that the difference between 2 and 3 sprays is very small. This is the reason I’ll ask to try the gel too, because when I was still on lenzetto, I got some breakthrough hot flushes towards the end and I was doing 4 sprays.

It isn't just if they lick you. I can't find it now but there's an old post about someone's cat losing it's fur because of contact with oestrogen on the skin. Whichever you use I think it needs to be somewhere where they won't come in contact with your skin. I don't know which is best but suspect not oestrogel, I found if I applied it in the morning if I put a hot water bottle on my thighs in the evening they became sticky so presumably not everything had been absorbed in 12 hours, though it's quite possible there wasn't any oestrogen left.

Thank Jenna, that wasn't the one I was thinking of but it's just as useful. I've bumped it as it's important any pet owners are aware.

It is a bit of a minefield isn't it. If the cats sleep on the bed then there is presumably a risk of transfer? If it is applied in the morning I wonder if by the evening the risk of transfer to the bed would be minimal?

If the cats sleep on top of the covers it shouldn't be a problem and don't let them touch the area where you place the gel.  It's unlikely to be transferred from sheet to pet.
