Hello ladies,
I have been looking at this site for a few weeks and have finally decided to join in for some support.
I am several years post menopause. After a few weeks of unpleasant symptoms I finally plucked up the courage to visit my GP.
She diagnosed GSM menopause. She didn’t really explain what it was, but sent me away with some estriol cream and has also arranged an ultrasound as I had a very small amount of bleeding (I suspect wiping too hard!)
I am really anxious about having to have an ultrasound. I have problems with anxiety and I’m convincing myself the ultrasound has only been arranged as the GP suspects something serious.

They have to investigate any post menopausal bleeding as a cancer risk but the vast majority show no problems. It isn't unusual to get a little blood with gsm as the tissues become thin and tear easily. I know it's easy for me to say but try not to worry, it's very unlikely they'll find anything sinister.

I was so embarrassed/ worried about discussing my symptoms that I didn’t think to ask whether it was a routine investigation.

If you have vaginal atrophy (GSM) then this is sufficient to explain small amounts of bleeding.

If this settles once your genital tissues are estrogenised there is no need to have an ultrasound.

Any investigation is optional and you do not have to consent to an ultrasound if you don't want.

However a free pelvic ultrasound is always good to check the health of your reproductive organs.

Additionally you can ask for an external scan only if you don't want a transvaginal scan.

Hope it all goes well, they are lovely and it’s quite relaxed, I’ve had loads of them over the years, I always marvel at how they know what they’re looking at as it always looks fuzzy to me! They’re a clever lot! You’ll be great!

Nowt is OTT or too much info on here    though it sometimes depends on our ethnicity as well as how we were raised i.e. 'don't touch down there'.

In all the recent research of why a woman doesn't come forward when she suffers symptoms is because of being too embarrassed, amongst other reasons.
Its also because of this that a lot of medics have also never heard of GSM, to the detriment of those who do and need the correct dosage to control symptoms, most times having to fight for it.
