Irregular bleeding
« on: September 17, 2025, 03:08:56 PM »

Hi, last year I had irregular bleeding, had scan, hysteroscopy etc came back OK just had thickened lining. Settled down again but in last 3 months I've started on/off bleeding again.
Don't want to go through all that again with hysteroscopy etc so thinking of coming off and see if bleeding stops and what symptoms i still get, but can I just stop or do I have to do it gradually? If so how? I know I can go to 1 x pump but can I take capsule every other day then lessen?
On 2 x pumps oestrogel and 1 x capsule protestan for 3 years.
Feeling exhausted, in pain, moods up and down, really don't think hrt is working for me.

I had already gone down to a 25mg patch (which is equivalent to 1 pump of gel) for a few months before quitting HRT.  I still had bleeding issues on the lower dose so I just stopped using the patches. I had the mirena though.  I imagine if you half your oestrogen dose you will still need to take a daily progesterone tablet, as one 100mg tablet of utrogestan (for example) would be the recommended dose for 1 pump as well as 2 pumps.

I think it's a real tragedy when anyone gives up hormone therapy due to bleeding, especially having only tried micronised progesterone, which is the weakest agent for endometrial protection.

This could so easily be managed by a skilled clinician.

It is also a shame when someone feels HRT hasn't worked for them, having only been on a very low dose and no testosterone.

Even in the absence of symptomatic benefit, low doses of estrogen can have some degree of antiresorptive effect on bone.
