Author Topic: On HRT but menopausal symptoms re-emerging - should I up the oestrogel dose?  (Read 344 times)

Hello folks

I've been on HRT for a few years (oestrogel x 3 pumps, mirena coil, testim gel), and have been experiencing really poor sleep, heart racing in the night, anxiety, and night sweats. These all stopped when I initially started HRT.

Would the answer be to up my dose of oestrogel? Would this address all of these symptoms, or are some of them related to progestogen? I don't want to cause an imbalance to that part of the regime. I have increased the oestrogel dose in the past but it sometimes causes breast tenderness, so I'm having to balance (choose?) between symptoms.

Does anyone have any advice? Desperate for a good night's sleep and to calm myself down. Going a bit nuts...

Thank you so much!

  • changes can be scary, even when we want them

What were your periods up to prior to using HRT?

Sometimes the ovaries spurt out hormones long after we think that they have shrivelled!

I had technically entered menopause (one year without a period) just when I started using HRT.

I agree it sounds as though your own production of oestrogen has decreased so an increase would be beneficial. Increasing slowly may alleviate the sore boobs problem. They may want to go increase your progestogen as well but it's to make sure your lining stays thin.

I would go with increasing the estrogen, but if that doesn't solve your issues there would be no harm trying some micronised progesterone for the anxiety and insomnia even though you have the IUS.

Oops, I missed that you have a mirena, the comment about increasing the progestogen doesn't apply. Utro acts as a sedative so it can improve your sleep (though it made mine worse), I don't think it will do anything for anxiety.

Thank you. I didn't know I could add progesterone on top of the mirena. I'll ask my gynae - thank you for the suggestion. I'll up the oestrogel first as you suggest.
