Utrogestan after Mirena removal
« on: August 26, 2025, 04:56:45 PM »

 I’m feeling really  :'(

I’m 52 and have using a Mirena and Evorel patches since I started HRT.

I went to get my Mirena coil removed and a new one inserted today. It was a failed visit. The pain was so indescribably terrible she had to stop after removing the old one. They’ve always been painful for me but this was off the scale.

I left with Utrogestan pills - which I’ve never taken before - and no coil.

I had a regular (but much heavier) cycle before starting HRT and getting my coil, but had no periods at all with the coil.

I don’t know how to take the Utrogestan - that’s my first question. I’d rather not have periods at all if I can avoid it, but don’t know if that’s an option.

And I feel so sad, for some reason, about not having got a new coil today. It feels like a backwards step. I don’t want periods again. I can’t explain the upset today, maybe it’s just the pain I went through today and the uncertain way forward  :'(

I had a big withdrawal bleed a few days after removing my mirena, this was not a period, as I’m still in peri and just had a period the week before. Just to give you a warning that if you get a (heavy) bleed now, it doesn’t mean you are still having periods.

Did you notice any cycle during mirena at all? I never was completely period free on my previous mirena, but I had some months where I would hardly spot, but I still had a cycle I was noticing.

If you might be post menopausal (could be, you are 52, so that is about the average age for menopause), you could take the utrogestan continuously (100 mg every night), that works for bleed free hrt for a lot of people post menopause. If you turn out not to be post menopause, and you really prefer to be bleed free, you could consider a progestin only birth control pill like Slynd as your progesterone part.
I’d try the Utrogestan first, to see how you do on it.
