Anyone stopped HRT and stayed off it?
« on: August 20, 2025, 03:54:53 PM »

I have had my 3rd hysteroscopy in 3 years due to bleeding. (I am 61 and post meno)
I have osteo and imflammatory arthritis from my neck  to my toes, diagnosed about 15 years ago. I do still work although had to drop my hours.
Anyway, since a blood clot 3 years ago my hrt has had to change, and it is constantly being tweaked, giving it 6 months to settle,  extra utrogestan, less gel, more gel, patches (which I don’t absorb) but nothing stops the bleeding.
I also have developed if that is the right word, a gallstone.
I was bleeding 1 week on 1 week off for the past 6 months hence my 3 rd hysteroscopy. I just got home from the op and thought ‘I can’t keep doing this’
I had to take those like puppy training pads for the bed in May when I went on holiday because of the heavy bleds.
I just feel like I have had enough, like I am going round in circles tweaking my hrt, and still bleed.
I have atrophy and use Ovestin every other day.
Has anyone stopped hrt and not gone back on it and been fine?

For some women oestrogen deficiency symptoms return and are life long, others can stop hrt and find they're ok. Might just be worth checking your bone density is good before stopping though. Have you tried a mirena? As that's usually the best option for sorting out problem bleeding and doesn't carry a risk of stroke. Or the synthetic progestogens such are better at controlling bleeding than utro. Or a sequi regime and have a scheduled bleed. Really it's better to find a progestogen that does the job so you can have the dose of oestrogen you need to control your symptoms.
I have no personal experience of stopping though, I've tried to reduce and every time I do my symptoms return. So I'm staying on it for life.

I stopped a long time ago and was fine, no issues. But as time went on due to the aging process, I am 76 now, I started to take supplements to protect bones, etc. Living a healthy and active life is important, the worst thing you can do is smoke and drink too much but otherwise I got off lightly compared to others.

I was on HRT to ease hot flushes, couldn't cope with them and after five years came off because the HRT was causing too many visits to hospital clinics and I suddenly realised I was losing my freedom, with added anxiety caused by waiting for hospital test results was driving me insane, when I stopped HRT the relief was enormous.

But we are all different, that was my experience.
