Health anxiety help pleas
« on: July 23, 2025, 06:52:45 AM »

Hi am fairly new here and looking to find out how others deal with HA during peri and menopause. I have always had HA but peri has sent it through the roof. Everyday I wake up I immediately think about something I might have that’s bad. How do you manage each new menopause symptoms? How do you know it’s not something else and serious - it’s taken over my life right now. I am crying and panics all the time. I lost my appetite 3 days ago and so now I think it must be something bad- I am scared every day. I google when I know I shouldn’t, I am convinced right now there is something wrong - how does anyone manage this and not be in the GP constantly asking g what’s safe and what isn’t - any advice really appreciated p.s am on 25mg of citalopram

It's The Change - does what it says on the tin.  Some find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary of use.  We have a thread about diagnosis ourselves with the 'next thing' so U R not alone.

Is it a thought process that starts your worry or a physical surge of anxiety?  4 me it's the latter.

Don't GOOGLE unless your are on NHS websites and keep asking the questions here, continuing on this thread.

I work on the premise that if symptoms haven't become worse in 5 days I don't need to C a GP/Nurse Practitioner but watch and wait.

If anyone has the antidote to health anxiety they really should win the Nobel peace prize  ;)

However these are a couple of things that have helped me:

Remembering that most horrible illnesses are not an acute emergency and that waiting a couple of weeks at least would be unlikely to change the outcome. Therefore when a new symptom occurs, decide that you are not going to Google or make any medical appointments about it for a set time frame eg 2 weeks.

This can give you some breathing space and often the thing will either go away or become clear that it is something benign.

Instead of going immediately to the worst case scenario ie headache= brain tumor, remind yourself that statistically the vast majority of people with whatever symptom you have will have a much less serious issue than the worst thing it could be.

Exercise. This helps release endorphins and positive neurotransmitters, and increases confidence in your health and your body. Logically if you can complete a workout, you are probably not terminal, and even if you have diagnosed yourself with whatever type of cancer, or MS or sporadic Huntington's disease etc, you can tell yourself that getting as fit and strong as you can be will massively improve your prognosis.

Really struggling with HA this morning - woke up dog tired like my battery had been drained. Tiredness is a massive red flag for my anxiety which is a nightmare in perimenopause as it happens all the time. Honestly feels like this will never end. Trying to work but just want to lie down on the sofa with the dog and sleep. How does anyone hold down a job like this?!

Yes I have had so many tests the last few years! Always all ok. Was on HrT 25mg patch but have come down to half that and want to come off as not sure the HRt isn’t making my anxiety worse

Hi Sja

This is my first post having read so much on this most informative forum for some months now - thank you so much ladies for having the courage to share your experiences.  I've experienced HA for many years and recovered for periods of time but I do have setbacks.  The past year has been more difficult but things are improving.  I came across a book called "Its Only Anxiety" by Carl A James and its certainly helping me.  It describes different types of anxiety, the symptoms and the method of accepting  and surrendering anxiety in all its forms.  I don't normally recommend books but this method, I feel, is working for me and I was most definately experiencing similar symptoms to you Sja.  It takes practice and time and I do still have difficult days not not as many.  Bombsh3ll - your tips are most helpful and exercise is brilliant. Try and get hold of a copy of the book Sja - it may help.  I had nothing to lose - I was feeling so dreadful.

Sending hugs and best wishes Sja x

:) thank you so much for replying - will definitely look for the book, I’ll do anything tbh. I have had HA all my adult life but it’s off the charts with perimenopause- every day I am worrying and it’s exhausting - am lucky to have an amazing counsellor on WhatsApp but the daily obsession with bodily changes is crazy right now, he on earth can you be calm and logical when there can be a new thing every day!!  :(
I feel like I am waiting for something to be over all the time.

Same here.  Even on my better days I'm wondering when the next anxiety surge will happen  :'(

4 me it's going away from home; booking ahead; worrying about not being able to eat when anxiety hits.  Spontaneous; I'm usually OK.

Totally me too ❤️ going away is a nightmare - I used to love it but now I just have panic attacks and want to be home and exactly same a spontaneous incident I thrive in. Anything future comes with the dread and doom. Never used to be like this at all xx

I've always had back ground anxiety prior to events, hence the Valium during the 1990s - taken the evening B4.

When away from home I want the week to go by fast so that I get home B4 anxiety kicks in, as well as wanting to know whether I coped/not  ::).

I'm trying to nibble but the bananas don't suit my taste buds  :-\ so it's dates and Brazil nuts.  Now the worry about what to eat for lunch to fill me .........

When I can’t eat through the anxiety I try bananas, the little pots of jelly or rice pudding and have just started trying the food drink yfood which are actually ok. But I understand as when there is any form of anxiety adrenaline in your body - food just doesn’t want to come in to it 🥰
