Phantom PMS symptoms
« on: July 15, 2025, 11:02:53 PM »

Hi

I was just wondering if someone could reassure me I’m not imagining things.

My periods are pretty much non existent now (well I will have one then not another for 8 months then another).

I feel very much like I have PMs (sore boobs, anger, craving chocolate) but no sign of a period. I’m 100% not pregnant.

Are phantom PMS symptoms a thing? And if they are what causes them??

Yep.  or several years after my periods stopped I would get vague symptoms and think "Oh NO! not after all this time!"  ovaries can continue to pump small amounts of hormone which can give symptoms  ::)

I have never experienced this myself and hopefully never will be as I have been on menstrual suppression for decades, but I have certainly heard it described enough times to believe it is an actual thing.

It is probably akin to phantom limb pain, or to Pavlov's dogs becoming conditioned to salivate at the ring of a bell, even when there was no food.

I think out brains are creatures of habit and will continue going through the motions even when there's no need.

Certainly if I have been used to getting up early and then turn my alarm off hoping for a lie in, I will generally wake up around the time the alarm would have gone off, even though it hasn't.

They aren't phantom, they're caused by your hormones. The ovaries continue functioning after you bleeds stop just to a lesser extent. It can be another 10 years before they die completely.

Morning Girls - my periods went away in 2002 and I continue to get very itchy skin at times which I assume are the ovaries muttering.
