Hi, I’m glad that you’re ok and that your gp is helping. What did she recommend regarding sleep apnea? Let us know how you get on. When my nocturnal difficulties started I also suspected a reaction to utrogestan and I stopped taking it for at least a week but it made no difference so I’m back on 100mg. Hopefully you will find out what’s causing it soon. Despite being on the acid watcher diet my reflux has returned after being under control for months. I’ve found that my nocturnal breathing episodes can be triggered by more than one thing- acid reflux, my mouth drying out, not having the window open and now possibly allergies. I think it’s because all these things trigger mucus production in the throat. The hospital doctor said not to take sleeping tablets as it would be dangerous - my body is currently waking me up when my throat is narrowing but may not if I took sleeping tabs, and I guess some anti depressants might have the same effect too as they can make people sleep more deeply. Anyway the point of all this is to share my experience and hopefully you might benefit from it as it’s been months of trying to figure it out, lots of trial and error. At the moment I’m sleeping at 45 degrees so any mucus can drain away instead of collecting in my throat, but I’ve found if I sleep flat after about 3-4 am I don’t have any breathing difficulties, which points to reflux as the cause or the early rise in cortisol that has an anti inflammatory effect (a gp told me that) I really hope this info helps and you find out the cause x

Ps - apparently progesterone can relax the muscle that stops stomach acid coming up, so utrogestan could be a factor in that regard. I’m not sure if the oesophageal sphincter is capable of tightening once it’s been loosened..

When we notice anything 'off' with our bodies we tend to focus so anything that might be a trigger may be bothersome.  I would suggest a seasonal effect plus extra heat.

The air is dry.  When cooking the area may be dry.  Stay out of the kitchen?

Taking your GP's advice to use vaginally rather than taking a break means that your body continues with a regime.

Also an allergic reaction is usually sudden whereas sensitivities creep up.  I've had allergic rhinitis for years eventually found out that cat dander affects me: that was several years after my cats died.

Certainly women can be sensitive to the fillers/packaging of various HRT products rather than the fillers.

Hi Katherine,
Thank you for your reply.  Sorry to hear your reflux is back. It's so frustrating isn't it. I got a period 2 days ago and yesterday thankfully I felt a little better in my throat. I have stopped the utrigestan and lenzetto spray for now. I've been too scared to try it again to be honest. But I'll have to try again as my menopause symptoms were getting me down.  I have so many ailments that have come to the surface during this time in my life. Its hard to know what is what. I certainly don't like the narrowing of the throat feeling. But yes as you say progesterone can make it relax more and allow acid reflux up. I'm on so many tablets now that yesterday I was exhausted by it all. I'm on 2 heart tablets blood pressure one and one for sudden drop in pressure i cant remember the name of that conditikn, one acid reflux one, nasal spray, anti histamines and an inhaler that I use year round and then if I add the HRT I'm rattling going around  ::)
Thanks for your advise though. I probably will build up the courage to try vaginally  on low dose next week once I've had time to adjust to all the tablets I'm on.

Hi CKLD,
Thanks again for reaching out. I do agree the air is dry at times with extra heat. I used go have to have a humidifier in the house years ago as I did get a lot of mucus build up in the back of my throat then but the house I am currently in is very damp. The landlord just installed a PIV Unit in the attic ( positive input ventilation unit) I was having my gasping for air before this was put in so Its not down to that. I slept well last night and night before but I guess like you say I've become focused on this now. Hyper vigilant I guess. I remember years ago always having to carry a bottle of water everywhere as my throat always felt tight and I found myself looking for the water in the last few days. I hardly ever needed to drink the water but it was more of a security thing. Its just not knowing whether this would have happened anyway had I not taken HRT or whether it is the HRT. Who knows?  Hopefully, I will figure it out.
Thanks you all again for your kind replies with some very good advice.

That’s another thing I’ve noticed.. in the week before my period and during, my throat is much more sensitive and I’m much more likely to have breathing issues then. Maybe it’s due to progesterone being high at that time in comparison to oestrogen or maybe just the body is more sensitive, due to the mind being more sensitive. I’ve found stress, anger or upset can also affect my throat. You might find you prefer utrogestan vaginally. I tried it that way but lost the sleep benefits and I got tired and irritable as a result so went back to taking orally. I think with breathing issues there are so many factors that can affect it, it just takes time and trial and error to figure it out but you will get there. I have found gaviscon advance aniseed to be very good before bed although I have to combine it with diet and not eating before bed, I think for me it doesn’t stop acid coming up but it lessens the impact of it. I just bought a humidifier last week. The house I’m in has a lot of mould but I’m moving soon to a newer mould free house so I’m hoping the humidifier doesn’t cause damp there. I guess it’s a balance we need, not dry air but also no damp or mould. Keep posting and let us know how you’re getting on x

That reminds me: in the days B4 a bleed I would feel bloated as though I had asthma  :-\ . I would also crave liquids to the point of sucking the water off any celery sticks from the fridge.  These would go once the period began.

Hi Katherine, we sound like twins!! The house I am in is all mould too and I've reported it to the council but their answer was to install this unit to cool the air or rotate the air. I doubt it will do much cos my daughters duvet felt damp the other day so I had to put on the dehumidifier in her room and it filled up in no time. But our issues seem similar. I  am not too bad today although this morning my throat was vwey tight and it last quite some time. Its funny you mention having that symptom in the run up to your period as I just had my period (I am in early menopause but I still bleed- no eggs left)....I haven't built up the courage to try the progesterone vaginally yet . I'll see how i go.

Hi CKLD,
You do make me laugh with the image of sucking the celery sticks for water.....but its amazing what our hormones or lack of are affecting .

We do sound like twins! De-humidifiers are great at drying out walls and rooms. And Dettol mould and mildew spray is great for removing mould off walls. Are you in a position to move house? I moved into a new place a few days ago and it's got no mould and I already feel better. The issue hasn't gone as it's partly down to reflux but I've noticed an improvement.
