Has anyone on here had the Mirena taken out and tried progesterone? I had mine removed after 5 years , I’m 52 and had put in to manage heavy painful periods . Anyway the doc thought I may be in menopause or could be suppressed periods from Mirena so have me 100mg progesterone to take alongside my 3 pumps of oestrogen gel daily .
I’ve now got a very heavy period with flooding and clots . Not had one like this before , so now I can take progesterone 200mg cyclically the doc said or just have another Mirena put in .
Has anyone else experienced this and does taking 200mg progesterone cyclically alongside oestrogen sort out the heavy bleeding periods or not often ?

Your Doctor is mis-informed.  Peri-menopause are the years leading up to the final bleed = menopause.  Mother Nature may thrown in a curved ball if ovaries suddenly surge presenting a bleed which is usually investigated by a scan to check that all is 'well'.

Some forms of HRT can cause break through bleeding I think it's called.  Why not have another Mirena if you had benefit?

If you were good with the Mirena before, I'd get another one put in.

I might have to do the same as on my high estrogen dose I am now getting flooding periods where I basically can't leave the house for 2 days a month, as I'll just stand up and start walking.... and flood. And if there isn't a toilet very nearby things will get messy fast   

I'm on high dose P as well, 700mg sequential - and I've just started taking it continuously from day 5 now, at 300mg, increasing to 700 on day 16 - to try to address this.

I worry about getting a Mirena... I'm not bleeding outside of my periods but when I do bleed, it's ridiculous. This all started when I increased my estrogen. It wasn't happening on lower doses, I only needed pantyliners then....

Your doctor is guessing and probably incorrectly, some women aren't meno until their early 60s. Utrogestan is probably the worst of the progestogens at controlling problem bleeding. A mirena is the best followed by synthetic oral ones. Sequi is likely to be better than conti but won't stop them being heavy or painful. As the mirena suited you and solved the problem I would have another one. There's no age limit, I've recently had my first one at 64.

Micronised progesterone is the least effective option for controlling bleeding and at the doses commonly used simply isn't strong enough to eradicate a natural menstrual cycle if you are still having one.

If you had no problems with the mirena IUS I would get another whilst you can still plausibly claim it is for contraception - the NHS in some areas is becoming unwilling to fund it for endometrial protection.

Flooding is awful.  I remember moving forwards one morning and didn't dare move, I was in a public place.  A friend walked behind me to the nearest loo ........ and fortunately the pad held firm. Also excruciating pains

Just wanted to add that desogestrel (Cerazettte/Cerelle) 150mcg daily i.e. two 75mcg tablets can be really good as a bridge for getting rid of bleeding (whether menstrual or withdrawal) whilst waiting for a Mirena, even if you don't want to take an oral synthetic long term.

This did the job for me whilst I was temporarily unable to obtain my combined pill, is relatively easy to obtain and cheap to buy if you have to.

It’s frustrating, especially when you’re just trying to transition smoothly through perimenopause. If Mirena worked well for you before, it might genuinely be the best option again, especially since it's effective, local, and has a strong track record for controlling bleeding. Meanwhile, what Bombsh3ll mentioned about desogestrel is a solid short-term alternative too if you’re not quite ready to commit. A menopause clinic referral could also give you a more tailored plan.

Um, no thanks I'd rather not shake through the night with internal tremors and get 3 hours sleep. I'll take 2 days of bleeding over that.

Thanks for the advice I’m scared of having another put in as last time it made me want to vomit and faint as so painful putting it in also I spotted for 6 months after until it settled which was horrid too . That’s why I was hoping the progesterone tablets would work instead . But from what most of you’re saying the tablets are the least effective way for heavy periods then ? My doctor thought the progesterone tablets may work well though for it ?
Not if to try a few more months before just getting another coil if still not but so far I’ve bled very heavy for 5 days and total period still here at 7 days

I'm sorry you had that experience with the coil, but you should know that it doesn't have to be that way. You need to find a doctor who understands the need for pain meds around coil insertion. They can give you many things, from oral meds to take before you are there, to local anaesthetic in the cervix - but you really don't have to suffer through this.

Thankyou I will try to voice that again to them but last time it was local  anesthetiser gel on the cervix but it didn’t do a lot plus neurofen that’s all

I still think it is well worth considering an oral synthetic progestin such as desogestrel 150mcg, Slynd, provera or norethisterone if you are unsure or not keen on the IUS.

These can keep you bleed free until you are postmenopausal at which point you can revisit micronised progesterone.

Some people do unfortunately have side effects however the majority do not, and if you do you can simply stop it immediately rather than waiting for an appointment to have an IUS removed.

Thanks for the advice but I can’t even get an appointment with my GP about it all anyway so I may have to go to private clinic at this rate .
As I’m bleeding heavy still I’ve stopped using an oestrogen gel and being self medicating with 200mg progesterone for last 2 days to try to stop the bleeding. This was after researching on chat GBT
