Thickening of Endometrium
« on: June 18, 2025, 08:07:02 PM »

Hi , I’ve been on Everol 75 and 200mg Utrogestan for some time it’s been fine
However a few weeks ago I started spotting and had a pelvic scan which revealed I’ve got a tiny fibroid on my womb
My Endometrium is 4 mm
My Gp would now like me to have a Hysteroscopy which I’m not keen on as I’ve heard they are very painful

Does anyone know the normal range for the Endometrium? I will be speaking to my dr tomorrow

I'm not on hrt and post meno and I was told anything 5mm and under is normal.

I'm not sure if it's different if on hrt or in peri.

Hi

I was told the same as Violet, anything over 5mm should be investigated, but maybe it's the fibroid that needs checking rather than the endometrium??? I've no experience of fibroid but is it possible GP thinks it needs a biopsy? Might be worth asking GP why they are suggesting a hysteroscopy.

I had one around 2 years ago, along with a biopsy as I had slightly thickened endometrium and, for me, it was an uncomfortable experience but not painful. We are all very different and I know some have painful experience but some don't so please try not to worry too much. I also believe you can ask to have it done under general anaesthetic so if your GP does refer you you should ask the gynae about it at that appt.

Also, if you are referred it's probably it'll be under the 2wk cancer pathway, my GP took great care to warn me there would be references to cancer all over my hospital letter but not to be worried by it. I'm glad she took the time to warn me but I know many are taken by surprise and caused undue worry by the reference!

Good luck

That’s precisely how I’m feeling worried sick it just seems to be one thing after another
I live in London & received to book what in thought was a hospital appointment , it’s a phone consultation with the Gynaecologist

Hi Trixiebell, I have been there too (well, still am!). I have had three hysteroscopies and, at the last one, my endometrial thickness was 7.9mm and was absolutely fine. I had an endometrial biopsy taken, which showed no issues. The gynaecologist said that, when on HRT, the womb lining can be as thick as it was during menstruation years.
However, it’s always best to get it checked and I can tell you that the hysteroscopy isn’t pleasant but they will give you lots of pain relief. My hospital, Birmingham Women’s give you gas and air too. It’s over quickly and really isn’t that bad. Let us know how you get on

I suspect it's more to err on the side of caution than anything else. 4mm is fine, some say 5 though if the lining isn't smooth they might want a investigate further. Perhaps it's because they can't be 100% certain it's the fibroid causing the bleeding although it's very likely. I found it very painful though it didn't last long, I'd suggest making sure they have something available should you need it. We shouldn't have to put up with that amount of pain.
