Started Evorel 25 Leg cramps, and nightmares
« on: June 17, 2025, 03:02:26 PM »

Hi everyone

I posted on here previously as I was on the gel and Cyclogest, but started developing Aura Migraines every two weeks without fail. The migraines were debilitating and would come on with no warning, if I was driving I would have to pull over and phone a family member to collect me as my vision was affected and not safe to drive

It was advised by Newson health to try the Evorel patches (25) instead.  I stopped all HRT back in February, for the migraine reason and gut issues.  I have been delaying using the patches as I was due a smear test, and I already had to cancel once to an unplanned bleed.

Last night I used a patch for the first time, in the middle of the night I woke up with the most horrific cramp in both legs, something I have never experienced. After walking off around the house, it would start again, after getting maybe 2 hours sleep I then woke up from a nightmare, dripping wet.  I never experienced this leg cramp pain on my gel. As I was so desperate for sleep I ripped the HRT patch off.

Is this normal to have so much leg cramp from the patch?, I'm wondering if the patches are not going to help.

I appreciate it has only been one night, but from having not had this experience on the gel and now this, it makes you think twice about using them.

Did anyone experience this?

Thank you in advance

This must have been a horrible experience for you, however in terms of biological plausibility that the patch was causative rather than coincidental, it is difficult to see how transdermal estrogen in any form could trigger severe nocturnal leg cramps.

Even a reaction to something else such as the adhesive on the patch would be far more likely to present with other symptoms such as redness or itching at the site, or general unwellness rather than leg cramps.

I know it is difficult to be reassured when two events, one particularly negative, have a close temporal association - just last month I convinced myself I was having an anaphylactic reaction to scallops - however I do think it would be premature to write off the patches on this basis.

Why not leave it a few nights then on a night when it doesn't matter if you sleep in the next day, cut an even tinier sliver of a patch and try it again.

Or you could build up your confidence initially by just putting the patch (or part of a patch) on in the morning and removing at bedtime.

Obviously this doesn't make for effective treatment, it is about establishing tolerability short term.

(I plan to try half a scallop again on a day when my husband is at home 😉)

Hi

Thank you so much for your advice. I’m going to try it again, but make sure I’m not a work so if I don’t sleep well, I’m ok to be like a zombie the next day!!

Take care. X
