Having deliberated for a long time, I had a Mirena fitted on Friday with a hystoscopy.  I apparently tolerated it well as my cervix is in a strange position.  Just when I was feeling great it was over I got what I could only describe as labour pains.  Luckily codeine kicked in after half an hour.  Bleeding has been very light.  What other things could I expect? Woke up with a poorly tummy and feel tired.  I know we are all different but I’m interested in other experiences and if people had side effects, how long before they kicked in? Thanks x

I had a copper IUD for contraception many years ago and the first period I had whilst on it felt exactly like labour pains.

I was in a university lecture and nearly screamed out loud.

Fortunately this settled down spontaneously over the next few months.

Some people do experience initial cramping with a coil as the uterus is not used to a foreign body being present.

If there is unusual heavy bleeding or discharge, or you feel feverish or generally unwell, it is worth getting checked out.

I had bleeding for a month when I got mine, though it got lighter as the month went on.  Since then I still have periods but they are lighter than they used to be and I only get mild cramps the odd time.  I had hoped they would stop altogether but no such luck.  Some cycles are longer than others though, and I did go 3 months without a bleed earlier this year.  However, I then had 3 periods in just under 3 months, so for me there has been no consistency.

I was lucky enough to not get any side effects other than spotting for about 12 weeks. It wasn't much and wasn't constant. I was 10 years post menopause when I had it fitted so no further bleeding at all. From day 1 I wouldn't know it was there.
