High Blood Pressure, Weight Gain & Migraines
« on: June 04, 2025, 01:04:12 PM »

Hi,

Just joined yesterday and it's lovely to be in a space where I can talk to other women going through the same thing.

I started the menopause 2 MONTHS after the 50th Birthday and honestly, it's been a total horror show.  My menopause announced itself by giving me blood pressure so high where I spent over 10 hours in hospital trying to get it back to normal levels.   About the 3 months later all the other symptoms showed up including anxiety and gradual weight gain. I was a size 8 all my life until recently (I even had a 6 pack).  I hate looking at my body, it feels like I've invaded by an alien with massive boobs.  :'(

I'm just wondering how other women are coping?   I've developed migraines recently and had a to have a brain scan, I've be prescribed proprolonol (sorry about the spelling).  Is anyone taking this and what have been your experiences?

:welcomemm:  how old R U now?

My GP gave me Propranolol to ease early morning anxiety surges, I took it every night B4 bed.  It certainly helped me.  What was the reason for you being given this?

How did U recognise high BP?  Were you referred back to your GP and what treatment was recommended, unless U mean the Propranolol?  How do U feel now.

Migraines can become problematic during perimenopause.  There is a relatively new medication for these symptoms. How badly R U affected and do U get warning?

R U aware that there are dedicated menopause clinics but both in the NHS and private sector there are waiting lists.

I was offered them for my migraines.  Can I ask have you experienced any side affects?   I'm asking as I'm kind of nervous taking them?  I've just finished a course of acupuncture. That was helpful

I had suddenly woke up with horrible headache and went to the Dr and they noticed my BP were abnormal.   I take separate medication for my BP I have since 2021.  Been monitoring it but now thinking of reducing the dosages as the personal readings are very very good.

It can be anything, blurred vision, auditory sounds, numbness (face, hands, limbs) tension in head.  Sometimes 1 thing and sometime a number of things at the same time!!

Really! didn't know that!!  Is there a list I can look at?

Also thanks for replying.  I really appreciate it.  :)

I had no side effects with Propranolol.  Started on 80mg 3 times a day, then down to 40mg twice a day ............ eventually 20mg at night, and stopped it at the start of Covid. Been OK since.

Do U take your BP at home?  DH would use the home monitor b4 Bfast at the same time every day.  I never registered on his machine  ;D [both in our 70s]

Depending where U live you could look at the local Hospital to see whether they offer dedicated clinics, some GP Surgeries have a GP with 'knowledge' - ours does but it isn't advertised  :-\ ::)

Browse round.  Make notes.  Ask away.
