Adrenaline feeling, palpitations, gel vs patches
« on: May 14, 2025, 02:25:02 PM »

Hi

I recently posted about palpitations that I’ve been suffering from – atopic beats – for nearly 2 weeks. They have been absolutely dreadful. I am on oestrogel and was told to increase it. Originally, I was only on one pump and it worked so well but then I got the palpitations. I increased it to 2.5 pumps and although it eased the thudding of my heartbeat. Especially at night and when I’m lying down, it hasn’t taken it away and in between gels, I am getting a lot of palpitations. I don’t know whether I should be changing to the patches and if the gel could be causing a problem – has anyone else had this? I get a weird adrenaline like feeling inside and lots of anxiety. I’m also getting very low mood. My GP today though has query whether I have some adrenal gland problem – I have benign tumours on my adrenal glands. She said it’s an exceptionally rare condition. Of course that is only caused me to worry more!

Any help at all is so welcome.

Hi Happeechic

When I started patches I got this - heart thumping, missed beats, palpitations and I found decreasing the amount improved symptoms but even at half of 25 Evorel patch the heart thumping stopped but was still getting the other symptoms albeit milder.  I persevered for about a year but decided to stop it altogether and just try localised oestrogen, even on just this I can only do the bear minimum ie twice a week for Vagifem and twice a week with the lowest does of cream for the exterior ie 0.01% not 0.1%.  On the 0.1% cream the palpitations and missed beats would start again.  It seems some of us are very sensitive to hrt and sadly I am one of them - you may well not be but just need to find the right level for you.  I also cut out caffeine as that caused palpitations too.
Hope that helps and good luck

I totally understand how you feel. I also got horrible adrenaline and panicky feelings with HRT (oestrogen only for me as have had a hysterectomy) as well as palpitations.  It took quite a while to get the dose right which for me was a much lower dose than I was put on although I know that those effects can also be if the dose is too low so the roller coaster bit is getting the dose right.  I settled down on the dose for 2 years and then just recently they all kicked off again and have just been advised to lower the dose even more to 50 and again everything has settled down again.  The anxiety, adrenaline type feelings are awful I feel for you I really do but hopefully when your dose is right for you things will settle down again.  I was on gel originally but for the last 2 years have been on patches which seem to suit me better but everyone is different. I am stupidly sensitive to the smallest dose change of oestrogen so have to take it very very slowly over any change in dose.

This is also me...I persevered for two years on 2 pumps.of gel, patches were not the right fit for me..I have had horrendous dread feelings, anxiety, palpitations...by far the awful dread feeling was the worst...I would be calmer for a few weeks then off it went again..
In the end . I reduced to 1.5 pumps and it really helped with these symptoms..sometimes I need just 1 pump...this seems to be enough to control other symptoms......I have had to use antidepressants along side...
The balance is very difficult to find....
I'm not asking was before perimenopause   but I'm at a place now where night ca .manage things in the most part..
I wish you well..and to say it takes a very strong person to deal with it all. :)

Your post caught my eye because I also have an adrenal tumour and I was investigated all through my 40s for palpitations that had no apparant cause. Noone has ever said to me they might be linked, although common sense suggests a link. I've been on the list for an CT scan since July last year as my adrenal tumour hasn't been viewed since 2016 when it was 10mm.

It seems menopause was the cause of my palpitations, I didn't think oestrogen helped me much at all. I had Evorel patches, no good. Estradot patches, some benefits. Oestrogel, wow, that was so strong compared to the patches for me, but still wasn't quite right, in fact it might have increased my palpatations.

Now I take tibolone and whether that is the cure or whether it's the THC, something has completely resolved my palpatations!

So palpatations began in my late thirties and ended with me starting tibolone age 52.

The other advantage of tibolone, (apart from my GP saying "it's the safe one we can give to anyone", not what google says btw), is that there is no need to endure the progesterone days AT ALL!!!

As well as hormone replacement and bone protection, Tibolone acts as a significant antidepressant and boosts libido, it's the ONLY medicine with testosterone, as well as the other two hormones, that is licensed for women in the UK.

It's significantly better than the various oestrogen and progesterone preparations, it is much more complete and natural feeling, I know I'm lucky to have been offered it.
