Thrush after HRT trial…HELP!
« on: May 10, 2025, 03:05:58 PM »

Hello you lovely lot, after a bit of advice please if possible…

I trialled HRT recently (43 and suspected perimenopausal - heart palpitations, jittery anxiety and night sweats when it was period time)

Was prescribed Estradot 50 and Utrogestan to take vaginally. I have a history of gastritis and was told by the menopause consultant that the patches and vaginal tablets wouldn’t affect my stomach. Sadly they did, caused a massive and intolerable gastritis flare-up, and aside from that the Utrogestan caused severe depression which I’ve never suffered with before.

I’ve had two, regular as always, periods since stopping the HRT. Both heavier and more painful than usual. I can cope with that. However, the two times I’ve ovulated since stopped the HRT have brought me an irritated bladder and thrush! Again, these are things I’ve never suffered with before in my life! Tell a lie, I had thrush once years ago after some antibiotics.

I’ve also got severe low mood still, like the Utrogestan gave me. This fact and the fact that the jittery anxiety and night sweats haven’t returned make me feel like my progesterone has stayed high?!

How long will it take for this to settle or is this permanent? I cannot cope. The thrush and irritated bladder at ovulation time for a few days I can cope with, with the help of Caneston, but this fatigue and low mood are crippling me.

It is unlikely to be thrush but could be vaginal atrophy. Do read the threads on this - VA mimics repeated urine infection-type symptoms really really well.  Get onto your surgery ASAP next week and ask for vagifem for internal use as well as estriol/ovestin to smear gently onto the outer labia etc..  Some GPs don't realise that women may require both in order 2 get symptoms under control and many have to use every night - despite what the leaflet in the box states. i.e. twice a week  :o  >:(

What are your periods up to?  Peri-menopause are the years (10+) when we notice hormonal upsets.  My periods waxed and waned for several years B4 I realised in 2002 that they had stopped.  After which I had dry skin : as oestrogen levels drop the body may become dry: inside and out: hence the vaginal issues.  I had itchiness across the back shoulder blades and insteps  ::) .  Fortunately this didn't last long and apart from VA treatment, I've been lucky.

Do U keep a mood/food/symptom diary, some find it of use.  Let us know how you get on.  U don't need examinations to be prescribed VA treatment.

Thank you. I’m certain it is thrush, as the Caneston cleared it up within a couple of days last time, and then it returned with ovulation again this time. Got some more Caneston today. I read online earlier that hormonal changes can cause thrush for some women, so I’m assuming it’s the HRT that has triggered it as I’d never suffered with it before.
Periods are like clockwork, every 26 days, last for 3. I don’t suffer with dryness, if anything it’s the other way! Sex drive has been off the scale too since I quit my COCP a year ago!

One doesn't have to suffer with dryness to have the start of VA.

MayB get a sample [not the word I'm looking for  :-\] to check that it is thrush, for appropriate treatment.  I used to itch very high up at the end of each bleed  :o.  Thrush was a different itch  ::) Canestan had me in the cool bath for hours due to burning  >:(

U seem as though your ??  itchy ?? symptoms are cyclical and if treatment works, stick with it. Let us know how you get on.
