UTI symptoms but no infection ?
« on: May 04, 2025, 12:51:31 PM »

Hello can anyone relate?
The past week I’ve had uti symptoms
Need to go to the toilet often. Irritated bladder etc
I went to the doc and had a urine test which showed no infection, before the results was given antibiotics which did nothing.
What’s going on?
I’m post menopause and was on hrt patches for past few years. I supplied a few days ago before the uti symptoms
I stopped because I had constant spotting and was sick of going back to doc/gynocologist

You probably have Vaginal Atrophy (GSM). Ask your GP for topical oestrogen, it can take up to four months to feel the effect but its a condition that only gets worse if not treated and its for life.

This forum has tons of posts on the condition which will also be a great help if you search for Vaginal Atrophy.

Yes thanks. I do suffer from that. I’ve been given the cream before but I never used it as I’m not sexually active because of it.
I didn’t realise it can cause uti symptoms.

Vaginal atrophy can mimic repeated urine infection-type symptoms really really well.  Why didn't U use the appropriate treatment  :-\

Every night for as long as is required will help.

I suffered a lot of UTIs but always after sex however as the atrophy got worse I had irritation around my bladder which felt like I needed the loo. I was given vaginal estrogen by the consultant and didn't use it. I really wished I had. It doesn't recover. It deteriorates so you need to treat that area inside and outside too  if necessary. You'll find it makes a big difference.

Did you get pelvic pain too? I get how it can make you feel like you want to go to the toilet but I actually do go and I wee a lot frequently. Plus a get a pain in my side sometimes. I should take the cream I suppose. It’s just getting really depressing. It’s one thing after another these days.

VA can bring on all sorts of pain, including the pelvic floor area, all muscles are affected by lack of oestrogen.
It won't get any better, only worse and you are delaying the inevitable, don't get to the stage where you won't be able to sit down and worse, its a horrific condition that needs treatment.

Get on top of this condition then you will be able to cope better with the other crap that comes along with aging, because there is always one thing after another.
Sorry to be a Debbie Downer  :)

Rarely the vaginal lips stick together which requires surgical intervention.  What's your worry about using the appropriate treatment Chrissyjo?

Menopause is natural, i.e. the final period.  However, symptoms may become difficult to ease !

I didn’t think I needed the cream as I’m not sexually active. I didn’t realise it would get worse so I’ve started the ovestin tonight

I got sensations as though I had pressure on my bladder. If you've had everything checked and there's nothing else causing it then it's likely vaginal atrophy from lack to estrogen. It doesn't matter if you're sexually active or not. I know some women who aren't but are fine and others with this condition who have all the symptoms whether or not. Of course if you were sexually active you'd have the added challenge of penetration and pain. But get the treatment. I used the ovestin/estriol cream on the outside mixed with Yes moisturizer and vagifem pessaries inside. It takes a while so you need to be patient and persevere but you'll find it helps
