Blood results - post menopause
« on: April 29, 2025, 10:19:15 AM »

Hi, I have been lurking for a year but would love some advice please.

In 2021 I lost my little brother to suicide. He had Bipolar and schizophrenia. It was hard to go through. That was in June and then in August I had my last period.

Since August 2021, I have had no periods at all.

I have felt low, depressed and full of anxiety since. I thought it was grief that stopped my periods so didn’t reach out to anyone. I’ve not been on any contraceptives. Oh I’m 46 by the way.

Then last year, I was my depression got worse where I started to have suicidal ideation.

My GP prescribed my 50mg of sertraline. Been on that dose since Feb 2024.

He also did a blood test and now looking back at my NHS app it shows the following:

Serum FSH level:
71.3 u/L

Serum LH level:
31.1 u/L

Serum oestradiol level:
358 pmol/L

This past month I have been in bed from the anxiety and depression. I literally cannot move. I have a feeling of dread in my stomach that won’t go away. I reallly hate myself.

I mentioned to my GP about menopause and she said to join this group and go back if I ever bleed again.

I don’t know what to do. That’s 3 GPs over the past year and a bit that have maybe not picked up I may need HRT.

I don’t know. I have signed up to boots doctors online to see if the can help. But I know you all can only advise me. But am I post menopausal. If I am, why was my oestradiol so high?

Thank you in advance.

I am sorry for your loss and stand  with you.
Have you had, sought out, been offered any counselling ? Grief has no timeline.
SOBS (Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide) is one such charity or there may be others local in your county.

Hi,
Thank you so much. I have referred myself to my local talking therapies. I have been put on a waitlist for intensive CBT therapy. Hopefully that will help me too.

Thank you again for replying.

Glad that you have something. You would find SOBS more specialised if I could put it that way.
Have you got any support or family around you ?

I'm so sorry for the loss of your brother. I lost my brother too, and it's a very difficult experience. I found support from a charity called the Compassionate Friends. They have a Facebook group especially for siblings.

Regarding the menopause, this may well account for some of the depression and anxiety you have been experiencing. Have you specifically asked the GP for HRT? Sometimes you have to be quite assertive. I went to my GP with a list of my symptoms and asked for oestrogen patches and utrogestan. They prescribed this for me without any further testing or anything. I'm 43 and was still having occasional periods.
