Hello from new member

Hello, I'm 53 and started getting very irregular periods 3 years ago but no other symptoms. This coincided with leaving my high-stress existence in London and relocating with my partner to the west coast of Scotland, where he grew up, where we have a much better and calmer quality of life. Soon after we moved, my parents in the south of England became dramatically frailer. I also developed quite severe and overwhelming anxiety, as well as low moods and insomnia, despite absolutely loving our new home.

No period now for almost a year. I can't take HRT due to family history of breast cancer.

A year ago I went to see a GP. She said that because I can't take HRT, and I'm already living a healthy active lifestyle, there's nothing more that can be done for me. She said that the symptoms weren't necessarily due to the menopause anyway and could be caused by my huge change of life, and worry about my parents. However she did recommend this website. She also agreed to prescribe antidepressants, but only a month or two at a time and I had to make a new appointment to discuss how I was feeling before she'd prescribe more. Well that didn't last long, I managed to get an appointment the first time I ran out of pills, but the second time I couldn't face the struggle to get an appointment in time and came off them without discussing with the GP.

The other day I was feeling particularly miserable and rang the surgery. The receptionist said she had no appointments and to try again at the end of the week. By the end of the week I was of course feeling slightly better and distracted by other things, so didn't ring.

Well, that's me.

Hello and welcome to the forum, sorry you're feeling so bad.
I too didn't take HRT due to breast cancer in the family but I believe that is a slightly outdated information,as I never took hrt I can't really advise on it properly but I sure someone will be along soon to inform you.
Do you know if there are any meno clinics near you? Or even a meno savvy nurse at your practice. Sadly Drs can be so ill informed when it comes to treatment for menopause.
Oh and welcome Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿  :)

Hi!    :welcomemm: and welcome to Scotland.

I suspect that your move compounded the hormone issues, upset is known to alter cycles etc.; when ever I went abroad my periods would appear even when not due  >:(

Your GP is totally incorrect!  There are many ways of delivering HRT when necessary: Quality of Life should be considered too: as for a month or two of any treatment is outdated!  Did the ADs help at all?  6-8 months initially is the way to find out whether they help/not.  I've been on them since 1988.  Betablockas can ease anxiety surges and I have used Bachs Rescue Remedy mouth spray with success too.

Our Surgery has a triage on-line form to fill out when appts can be slotted in, in fact when we go into the waiting room for anything, it's usually almost empty!

Who told U that you are unable to use HRT in any form?  It's now recognised that even if a close relative has breast disease, it will depend on which type of cancer it might be.  Oestrogen which our bodies make naturally and which levels drop as we age, may trigger disease but I don't know how likely that actually is relative to causing cancer.

Do be aware of vaginal atrophy too: 4warned is 4armed ;-).  We have plenty of threads on the Forum and there is no reason not to use appropriate treatments should symptoms develop.  Let us know how you get on! Ask away.

 :welcomemm:
Seems to be a case of Sod's Law. Go to gp wanting hrt and they'll dole out ADs like sweets but don't want to give you hrt. Go wanting ADs and they're far too dangerous...
Sounds like classic meno symptoms to me, there's a huge difference between normal anxiety over something that's troubling you and the overreaction you get from oestrogen deficiency.

Thanks all.

When I lived in London I attended the breast cancer family history clinic at Bart's Hospital (Mum has had breast cancer 3 times and survived it; auntie had breast cancer back in the 90s and passed away). They told me I wouldn't be able to take HRT if I ever wanted to.
I told the GP in Scotland this - I don't know if this is in my medical notes or not.

In any case I want to avoid medication if at all possible (my poor 88 year old Mum is now existing on a cocktail of drugs). But I don't know what to do. I have had counselling / CBT at different points in my life and never found it much help (one psychotherapist told me I have a brain that is resistant to therapy). I live a very active life, working part time as a gardener, cycling and hill walking a lot, have a healthy diet, am slightly underweight, so there doesn't seem to be any further lifestyle changes I can make either. So I feel stuck as to what to do.
