Weird side effect - progesterone?
« on: April 24, 2025, 09:10:17 PM »

I have been on HRT for about a month. Gel and progesterone.  I feel good but when I take the progesterone, my taste buds seem to get irritated and it feels like I’ve eaten something really bitter.  They look visibly raised on the sides of my tongue at the rear.  I am going to speak to my doctor but has anyone else had anything like this? Many thanks

Hi there,

Not sure it is a specific reaction to the HRT but I frequently have a sensitive tongue to things I eat that never used to e.g. tomatoes, salty and spicy foods so I am more careful with what I eat these days. I put it down to fluctuating hormones/menopause so it could be the progesterone or an imbalance. Try searching for Dry Mouth Syndrome and you will see that lots of ladies suffer with mouth issues.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.  I am pretty sure it’s related to the progesterone as I don’t get it at any other time and I haven’t eaten for a few hours before and it starts about half hour after I take it.  It feels like a reaction as my mouth  also tingles 🤷🏻‍♀️. It wears off after a couple of hours.  It’s a bit annoying as I feel so much better other than that!
