Did anyone watch LW today regarding Kelly Holmes having a Hysteroscopy - she went privately and had GA but she said since sharing this she has been contacted by thousands of women stating that they were told to take 2 paracetamol before the procedure!! I’m pretty certain that this is the advice from my health authority ( I am due to have mine on Thursday) I am still trying to contact the hospital as I was told the appointment date and time via telephone and still haven’t received an email informing me of what to expect - I have called 6 times today and the call was not answered!! Any advice?

Your body, your decision.  How long have you had to wait for the appt.? 

In it cheaper and quicker for women to B treated without a GA and many R not given the choice.  This seems 2 B something glossed over at appts. were U not given any advice

Paracetamol doesn't work for me anyway.

I was left a voicemail on Friday and called back and was given an appointment on Thursday but no advice or email received! My initial GP appointment was last Monday so it has happened quickly. The only thing I’m waiting for is bloods - couldn’t get an appointment until next Tuesday!!!

Can you ring up and speak to the secretary instead?

I've had a couple of hysteroscopies, and the advice was to take paracetamol.

For me, I had pain on and off during the procedure, but i got through it as didn't want a ga. A small minority feel little to no pain, but most experience bad to unbearable pain.

If you have polyps removed you may experience mild contractions after.

All this should settle quite quickly once finished.

Also, you may bleed for about a week after,so make sure you bring a sanitary pad with you.

Hello ladies.

Another Loose Woman, Nadia Sawalha  had a hysteroscopy about a year ago. Her appointment was also private and she had a GA.

I wasn't told anything about pain relief when I had my procedure and it did hurt. If I need another one I will ask for pain relief or supply my own ( plenty of paracetamol or a few gins).

I have called today and they asked a nurse to call me regarding the procedure- she said they do advise paracetamol an hour before! They also have gas and air on hand too. She also said it is advisable to be collected after the procedure as they do not recommend driving (this is not stated anywhere else).
Has anyone used gas and air for their hysteroscopy? Did it work?

I had one last monday and asked for LA they told me it make no difference as the cervix is not being stretched, i told them the secratary had said i just had to ask on the day for LA, i ended up having it with just the 2 paracetmol, i felt like lied too about LA and G &A not even offered

Hi i watched on catchup after seeing this, very interesting, made hubby watch too. I feel lied too as i was told a LA make no difference to this procedure.

I also made my husband watch LW on catch up - he was shocked!

It is reasonable to request general anaesthesia for a hysteroscopy.

Some women experience minimal discomfort but others find the pain unbearable.

It is entirely your choice and you do not have to consent to a procedure in the absence of the appropriate level of anaesthesia for you.

If you want a GA and have made and informed decision, understanding that this has some very small associated risks, you need to make this clear to your clinical team in advance of the procedure.

It may be a good idea to put this in writing to your consultant.

Carrying out invasive procedures on women without appropriate anaesthesia has been a longstanding problem within our healthcare system, and is largely driven by cost/resource issues rather than patient safety or wellbeing.

A man having a prostate biopsy on the NHS is routinely provided with local anaesthetic and can get a GA on request. There is no universe in which he would be told to just take 2 paracetamol!

Had my appointment today, took ibruprofen and paracetamol an hour before and then had gas and air during the procedure - I was on the cusp of telling her to stop as the pain was awful and I could feel movement inside!
I managed to hold on for the checks to be completed - a polyp was found in my womb so biopsy done.
Advised to get it removed under GA.
I must say the nurses who were with me were amazing and were trying hard to distract me by chatting, they told me that I could stop the procedure at any point!!

I had a hysteroscopy 2 years ago on NHS. They first tried without GA but it was too painful for me so I asked them to stop and requested it was done under GA. I got another appointment to have it done under GA. It is your right to request this. No one should have to endure a painful procedure without the option of LA (if appropriate) or GA.

I had one a year ago and posted quite a lot of information about It on here following a very unpleasant experience. I did some research, contacted my MP who contacted the relevant government minister.  I posted some links.

"I've had a reply from my MP with a letter from Maria Caulfield MP.
It's quite long but mentions the Women's Health Strategy 2022. She also states that NHS England  are clear that women should be offered information about pain relief options prior to consenting to the procedure, that women should feel able to stop the procedure at any time and should be able to discuss alternative treatment.

There is also a women's health area on the NHS website and a section on hysteroscopy.   www.nhs.uk/womens-health.

In Feb 2023, the Royal college of obstetricians and gynaecologists published a good practice paper www.rcog.org.uk/media/ymvha2n3/gpp16-final-publication-proof.pdf

The RCOG is also updating its best practice in outpatient hysteroscopy guidelines. It's currently under peer review and due to be published soon."

At one point it felt like some of my skin was catching in something and they kept saying breath you re doing great. i was gripping the chair handle and nurses hand for a while.]  it was not for too long but i had asked for a la  and was told it would make no difference, hence feeling lied too

i  told them my extra strong ibubofen  are not doing ant thing i wish i had taken zap pain ( codine0 to be told t=you can when you get home
