Mental health and menopause?
« on: March 29, 2025, 03:06:26 AM »

Newbie here, but not new to HRT.  I'm on evorel sequi and have been for 6 years without any problems.

2 weeks ago I started getting hot flushes for the first time and sweating in the crease under each breast.  This is causing the skin to itch and get sore.

Last week I changed to the combined patch for this month and after 3 days I felt depressed, not just low mood but deep depression (out of nowhere), extreme anxiety and irritable.  I had a chest infection at the same time.. I had been absolutely fine before!

Does this sound like oestrogen dropping?

Has anyone else felt like this, suddenly, out of the blue?  Never had a 'reaction' to the combined patch before..

Hello juliaC and welcome to the forum.

I haven't had your exact experience but low oestrogen since becoming post menopausal has played havoc with my mental health.

My trusty meno book talks about a rollercoaster ride of mood changes and that certainly has been my experience. My moods can be up, down or dare I say it, fairly normal at any time of day and these changes can occur for no reason and arrive out of nowhere.

I don't have a solution I'm afraid but hopefully other ladies will be along soon with some advice.

As far as your chest infection is concerned I think some ladies have noticed that anti biotics have impacted their HRT so perhaps someone will have more information on that subject.

Wishing you well.

Meno symptoms creeping back in is likely to be because your own production is falling. It isn't at all unusual to need more oestrogen as your own supply wanes.

Hi juliaC,
yes exactly the same here, I have suffered all through with anxiety, panic attacks etc, and started the really bad sweating last year, and now this year low mood tearful like I'm depressed for no reason, absolute sympathy for you it's horrible, I would at a guess say low estrogen or sometimes it takes a while for symptoms to settle when changing hrt, hope you feel better soon
Best wishes x

thanks Kathleen, Sheila and Epona

I'm a bit better but was surprised how extreme anxiety and deep depression came out of the blue one day.

I've increased my estradiol and seem to have more stable moods.  I'm flushing tonight and not sleeping though but patch was half off earlier.  Doctor has suggested a blood test.  At least I've increased a bit which should help if it's that.  Never felt like that before, I've had anxiety and depression a bit in the distant past but always with a trigger.  This time no trigger whatsoever.  I just woke up that day  ;D

I'm wondering if it's possible to have an infection and it affect your mental health and cause flushing?

All this started with a tingling in my foot (shingles?  I had some tiny blisters form but so small) and a chest infection.  Sudden deep depression and then facial flushing over two weeks.

Since yesterday been 'glowing' despite increasing hrt patch and then last night sudden (sorry tmi) diarrhoea out of nowhere.

Face still feels hot.

Wondering if the whole thing has been an illness rather than sudden change in menopause after 6 years.  (or am I underestimating menopause and flushes)

Shingles is a whole different kettle of fish!  DH had it = felt fluey for a few days and ached a bit, it was a week B4 he would let me drag him to the Pharmacist by which time the rash was definitely herpes, I actually GOOGLED in the middle of the night then nudged him  ;D

Anxiety and depression can be drastically impacted by hormonal upheaval.  How were U during your menstruating years?

My outbursts of temper and sobbing were definitely cyclical.

I had 'good' childbearing years, didn't seem to get fluctuations in mood with my cycle.

I've just realised I've changed from an estriol cream 0.01% w/w to Ovestin 1mg of estriol.  It's been the only change, shouldn't do anything but I wonder if it's that.

Definitely had an infection too, niece and nephew went down with the stomach thing a day later, so that is unrelated at least.
