Estriol
« on: March 18, 2025, 09:26:53 PM »

I am finding that using Estriol morning and evening every day at the moment is helping with the burning pain inside and outside. Is it safe to continue using twice daily or should I reduce the dose? Many thanks.

Yes, it is perfectly safe, and others here use it once or twice daily. Good to hear it is helping your symptoms.

Tnx for the update.  If it works for you, continue for as long as required.  I use it at night, with an extra dose mid-afternoon if symptoms niggle.  It's a bit Trial and Error so if we find something that eases symptoms, stick with it.  Let us know how you get on.

Thank you for your replies. Can I use it safely every day for long term or should I try to go every two or three days when symptoms ease? It is the best it has been for weeks now.

I've used it safely everyday for years prescribed by my gynaecologist and GP.
I have 2 x 15g tubes every 6 weeks on repeat.

If U want to experiment be aware that symptoms may return so a reload will be necessary: 2-3 weeks nightly .  This can be inserted as well as smeared round the vulva to keep the area soft and less itchy.

It's a personal choice as to how much we each use, the info in the leaflet in the box is way out of date1.

I am using twice daily. The last couple of days I am having some breast pain. Wondering if I was using too often and having side effects. I am using little each time.

What R your periods up to?  Could the breast pain be cyclical?  Mine often nip or I am aware of them, usually due to using a weeding tool.

U could use once a day to see a) how symptoms are and b) whether the breast pains go away.  R U worried about the VA treatment affecting your breasts?

I am 64. Periods stopped years ago. I have read that breast pain can be due to using too much Estriol so wondered if this was the case. Maybe I should cut down to once daily then.

How much are you using? I use a pea sized amount every night applied around the vulva. I also use vagifem internally. When I first started using it I did get some breast tenderness but this settled after a couple of weeks. The local estrogen does go systemic in the first few weeks until the vaginal walls are hydrated again then very little goes systemic.

I am using just enough to cover inside and outside. I have stopped the Vagifem since last week. The soreness has improved with the Estriol only. When I first started using Vagifem around a year ago it really helped. But the last couple of months I have had urinary issues and soreness. I don't know why Vagifem has lost its effectiveness on me.

The fillers in vagifem can sometimes irritate and if you're really dry they don't always dissolve fast enough. If Estriol is working for you then just use that, it's trial and error where dosage is concerned. It might have been stopping the Vagifem that's caused the breast pain with a drop in estrogen, who knows.
When I first started Vagifem on the loading dose every day for two weeks I got pelvic cramps and nausea in the morning. When I then went down to twice a week I got the breast pain. Twice a week was never enough and gradually over the years the dose has increased to every day now. I'd definately continue using Estriol every day and just add more if you need to. You can always reduce the dose if you feel comfortable doing so, everyone is different and like CLKD said the leaflet is out of date and needs rewriting to reflect the difference to systemic HRT, the safety and extremely low dosage.

I used vagirux pessary twice a week for 4 years then suddenly it stopped working and I got all the symptoms.  Using Estriol cream now  regularly and feels much more soothing.  Guess out bodies change.
