One other thing that I meant to say, is make sure that you find someone who has been fitting the coils for a while, as there is a knack to it. xx

GS I had my coil fitted under anaesthetic while having polyps removed.  I had put it off for years as I was afraid of the side effects I had heard about from others.  However it seems to be working for me.  I had bleeding for a full month after having it fitted, heavier at first and then decreased over the month to spotting.  The following periods were way less heavy than before, but still annoying as I had hoped they would stop.  I also had some spotting between periods that I mentioned to my gp, and she then referred me for a scan/hysteroscopy.  It was there that I was asked if I would try coming off the oestrogen patch for a while to see if the bleeding would settle down.  I'm off it nearly 6 months now and I have a follow up appointment with the gynae in April.  I daresay they will tell me to stay off the hrt for the moment and I will happily do so.  I may well look to go back on it in the future if I find symptoms getting worse.  I'm 51 and managing for now.

Holsy, I know you said you didn't have any side effects, but can I ask you all how your sleep is with the coil? My sleep was awful before I was put on Utrogestan and I'd be worried about that changing if I get the coil. I'm not sure how I'll react if I lower the oestrogen, but it may be worth a try if I get the coil fitted. I'm just so worried about feeling more rubbish than I do lately!

Also, I've read that there's a risk of the coil coming out if you have fibroids. Any issues with that, or is it just one of the potential risks?

I will try and find out how long my GP's surgery have been fitting the coils. I know they do it.

I'm still leaning towards the idea of surgery eventually.

I've had no problems with sleep with the coil. I don't even realise that I have it to be honest, can't feel it, no side effects, no problems etc.  Mine has also never come out and I still have several fibroids, albeit I don't know what size they are now as I can't get a scan to check unless they start to cause problems, which they're not. Just the usual twinges and pain now and again. I have had no bleeding at all with the coil, only a very small bleed when the coil is changed every 5 years. 

A friend of mine has also just had the coil fitted, with no problems so far, my sister has also had one for years, again with no problems.

The only problems I have with sleep at the moment are menopause related. I'm now 55 and been on hrt (patches first, now oestrogel) for nearly 6 years.

It may be worth trying the coil for a while, whilst you wait for a gynae appt to discuss the option of major surgery.

Fibroids can make an IUS insertion a bit more tricky - if you do decide to get this done prior to your gynaecologist appointment I would make sure the clinician knows you have a fibroid and has access to your scan result so they know its size and location.

In the immediate term you could try a suppressive oral progestin such as desogestrel 150mcg daily which is non invasive and available over the counter if you say it is for contraception.

This would be 2 * 75mcg cerelle/cerazette pills.

This is off label but supported by the FSRH for menstrual suppression and by the BMS for endometrial protection alongside your estrogen of choice.

You would almost certainly be bleed free after a few weeks and possibly sooner.

Hi there

I am seing my consultant this week to discuss my fibroids 6.7 and on 6 cm then lots of small ones.  Had an MRI scan which shows either degeneration or suspicion.  I see you had a hysterctomy - do you have any advice?
