Brown spotting and bowel issues
« on: March 05, 2025, 03:09:41 PM »

Me again!

On day 292 without a period...however for the last couple days I've had brown spotting when I wipe.  Only a tiny amount and that kind of old blood debris!  Is this normal in perimenopause?

I've also been constipated at times over the last month, or having loose stools, there doesn't seem to be a happy/normal in between!  Had several thinner stools which have also freaked me out.

Since the new year I seem to have had all these random symptoms and it seems impossible to know if it's hormonal or something else! I was so itchy all over (but also in quite specific  areas) for the last couple months and had heart palpitations, both of these have subsided but now something else rears its head!

Yes absolutely all of the symptoms you describe are common in perimenopause.

In particular menstrual irregularity is common in the lead up to natural bleeding ceasing altogether.

However you don't need to put up with peri/menopausal symptoms - are you receiving any treatment?

One thing I can personally recommend for bowel issues - I've had sluggish transit all my life, it's not hormonal in my case - is ispaghula husk.

Thank you for your response, it's reassuring to know it's not just me :)  I shall look into ispaghula husk. I recently cut out fizzy drinks and caffeine so not sure if this is causing the bowel issues!

Hormones.  R they cyclical?  10 mins. B4 a bleed I would have to 'dash' even when a period wasn't due.  4 me it was definitely hormonally based.

I have suffered with slow transit for years: we've altered our diets in the last 2-3 years which have impacted.  From not going easily to having 'the runs' with small plops of poo. No rhyme nor reason  >:(.  In more recent months I've missed 24 hours ..........  :-\

Yes, I feel mine used to be connected to hormones, had to run to the loo before a period. Though now, I feel I'm all over the place, no rhyme nor reason to anything.  I seem to be going through a few months of various symptoms at the moment.

When hormones rise and fall they may affect the whole body so there's less chance of anticipating how we might feel.

Have you considered getting checked for fibroids?

I had similar symptoms… constipation for about 3 days followed by a day of diarrhoea plus a patchy type spotting that looked brown and at times, a pinky/yellow…

An internal ultrasound showed fibroids, but one in particular 5cm in the fundus of the uterus, which had pulled my uterus backwards and it was all pressing on my bowel, causing constipation/ diarrhoea!

Worth having a chat with your GP, any spotting they usually put you on a 2 week referral to the Women’s Health Clinic 🙏
