I know that there are a lot of women petrified of taking oral estrogen so just wanted to share some figures to put this into perspective.
From BMJ article by Vinogradova 2019;
The number of women who would need to take oral HRT for a single extra blood clot to occur is 1076.
Oral HRT results in an extra 9 thrombotic events per 10,000 women who take it for a year.
In clinical terms the absolute increase in risk for an individual is minuscule, much less than 1%
I think if there was more understanding of this by both clinicians and patients, a lot of suffering and inconvenience could be avoided.
Some people will obviously need and want to use transdermal, but for many others facing supply shortages, oral estradiol is an easy and viable alternative.
