HRT - Does anyone know whether it adds to or suppresses?
« on: March 01, 2025, 06:40:13 AM »

Morning all!

A general question as I’ve googled and cannot find an answer…

Does HRT add to/supplement what we are still producing naturally, or override it completely by suppressing the natural hormone production so we just run on the replacement hormones? Does that make sense?

For example, if my natural estrogen production is higher at ovulation and I’m taking estrogen daily all month, will it still be higher at ovulation because my natural estrogen adds to the HRT??

I meant to ask my menopause doctor this at our consultation but forgot. It’s just me being curious really!

Started on HRT this week (43 and in perimenopause) - been prescribed Estradot patches for all the time and Utrogestan tablets to take vaginally two weeks out of four.

No, menopause hormone therapy is not strong enough to suppress endogenous ovarian function.

If you would prefer menstrual suppression you could take a combined pill continuously like I do, and be bleed free and hormonally stable.
