Confused & Worried – Hormones, Perimenopause, and Fertility
« on: February 28, 2025, 02:02:38 PM »

Hi everyone,

I could really use some support and insight. I’m 41, married last year, and while I haven’t started trying for a baby this year, I at least want the option of having children. I’m focusing on improving my health and losing weight to reduce risks. I’ve been on Wegovy since November 2024, and I know the higher doses I’ve started recently could be affecting my cycles.

My mum and sister both had menopause around 52/53, so I was hoping I had more time. But I’ve had unusual bleeding this month (two periods/bleeds), fatigue, rosacea flare-ups, and other symptoms that make me wonder if I’m perimenopausal.

I asked my GP for FSH and AMH blood tests, as NICE guidelines say they’re appropriate for my age and fertility concerns, but they refused. So, I’ve paid £130 for private tests. Ironically, my sample is being drawn at an NHS hospital! I’ve also been tracking ovulation and was supposed to ovulate today, but my test says I’m not. It’s really disheartening.

I was pregnant twice last year, but both pregnancies didn’t work out. Now, I’m struggling with the idea that my time might be running out. Everything feels so uncertain, and I don’t know what to expect.

Has anyone been through something similar? Is there hope that I still have time? I’d love to hear from those who had late menopause or got pregnant later in their 40s. Any advice or encouragement would be really appreciated.

Thank you ❤️

Hi!  Worrying may well be enough to stop conception.  Did U get support following the two pregnancies that didn't go to term?  There may be a clinical reason why they didn't so future pregnancies should be over-seen closely.

Also R U seeing a dietician for advice about weight loss in relation to trying for a baby?

What's Wegovy?

My Aunt got pregnant at 42 - a menopause baby  ::).  His sister was 22.

 :congrats: on the wedding.

If you can afford it my advice would be to go to an ivf clinic asap as that gives you the best chance of a full term pregnancy. I had mine at 42, my mother had me at 40 and someone up the road had one (naturally)  at 50 so it's possible but as the know the chances of success reduce rapidly. Good luck.

Sheila just took the words right out of my mouth.

If you want to find out about your fertility status and reproductive options whilst you still have any, you need to get to a fertility clinic straight away. They will do all the required blood tests plus an ovarian scan to count your remaining follicles, and will be able to properly interpret and explain the results rather than doing it piecemeal on your own.

If it does turn out that you are entering early menopause, they can write to your GP with a recommendation for treatment.

Even if it is too late for your own eggs there are donor eggs/donor embryo options available.
