Shout out for brilliant GPs
« on: February 27, 2025, 09:16:15 AM »

I appreciate this isn't everyone's experience and that all too often we hear horrendous stories on this forum about how outdated/disinterested GPs are but I wanted to give a big shout out to those GPs who really are fabulous.

I have a fantastic GP - in fact there are at least three brilliant GPs at my surgery - who is menopause trained, takes time to listen and prescribes accordingly. She's currently undertaking further training to be able to prescribe testosterone (not sure if this is mandatory or just something our surgery want her to do).  My surgery - in Warwickshire - is led by two female partners, both in their early-mid forties which probably makes a huge difference to the practice attitude but there has always been at least one female GP specialising in menopause for the last 15 years or more.

For anyone new to peri/menopause who is working up to visiting their GP for the first time - don't be put off by the very poor support some forum members experience, you might be fortunate enough to find your own GP is like mine.

For anyone experiencing poor support, take a look at alternative local surgeries and see if any have female partners as I'm sure this makes a difference!

And for any GPs who are members of this forum - THANK YOU for being interested enough to be here and those of us who are lucky enough to be members of practices like yours please know you are very much appreciated

Thank you  :) I did hesitate as I know so many people have poor experiences and I didn't want to gloat! But then I realised there must be a lot of us who do get brilliant service and that good GPs don't get the accolades that they should xx

Yes definitely a big shout out.
The one thing I was worried about when we moved to a new area was what would the local GP surgery be like after the wonderful treatment we had from our previous surgery. But I didn't have to worry, our new surgery and our new GP and staff are above and beyond brilliant.

I’ve got a great GP too. The surgery are fans of Louise Newson and deliver a lot of hormone support. I thought I’d need to go private to get prescribed higher than standard dose HRT and testosterone but that’s not been the case.
If I had to change surgery I’d check out what menopause/hormone help is available on their websites as this is a good indicator of training standards.

I also have a great GP surgery with a specialist in women's health who is fab.  I've told her she can never leave  ;D

We have had a good GP service since the 1980s.  When I met the new Doctor I told him never to tell me that "You have the germ that every1 else is suffering from, that when I go to the Surgery it's because I need advice!"  he's our age ;-) and has a wife.  He diagnosed my VA over the phone having seen a dipstick test of mine in the Surgery.  He was disgusted that my urine had never been sent to a Lab for testing and prescribed VA treatment that afternoon.

Last week at 5.00 p.m. Friday DH decided that he had a urine infection brewing, so off to the Surgery: he was seen within 30 mins by a Nurse who prescribed ABs.  The result of his urine test came back e.Coli, he got the phone call on Tuesday afternoon. [I did type this elsewhere on the Forum]

If we need advice we go to the desk and explain that either it's urgent, if not we can book an appt 2-3 week's time.

My GP practice is good, and the GP I saw at the time for my problems recommended this site to me. And she prescribed vagifem without hesitation and when I asked if she could prescribe it for every day use, she did without any issue.
