I thought I'd just add something here as I've been mulling things over since I saw my GP. I talked to her about the fact I couldn't lose weight even on 800 cals a day & she said 'you won't '! Then went on to explain its normal for menopausal women to put weight on, not be able to lose it etc etc. She wanted to know why I wanted to lose it (about a stone would be nice) & said she couldn't understand why women want to weigh what they did when they were 20. I did say I was a little concerned health wise which she dismissed & told me to stay of social media looking at unnatural images of women. I told her I'm not on social media at all & have no interest in how other women look just me being healthy & able to fit into my cloths without looking like an over stuffed sausage! She said I need to except who I am now. But she is obese. So I asked what should I do if in another 5 years I'm another stone heavier & she said just accept that too.
She spoke at lot of sense explaining how my body now works but is she bonkers or am I?!

I've recently had this discussion with my GP and her response was the same, it left me flummoxed as well! My GP is also on the heavier side, more so than me.

I was a size 8-10 and always around 9 stone, I'm 5ft 8. My diet wasn't super healthy but it was balanced. Since I turned 40 (5 years ago) I am now the epitome of the saying "I can't even look at a cake without gaining a stone". Size 16-18 and 14 stone 😔

I am in my eyes absolutely enormous, I know that my weight gain is causing me health issues and despite eating like a shrew I cannot drop any weight at all. Even covid round 2 gave me tummy upset and I only had sips of water and dioralyte for almost 3 weeks! Jumped on the scales after my first day of feeling ok and I had lost...... 2lbs!!! Is that it?!

I have no idea what menopause does to some of us but I'm just a chubby little seal now, flapping about with my flubber. I stopped stressing about it and stick with a very simple meat n 2 veg every night, Monday is veggie night (no meat) and Sunday is treat day with a roast and pudding. My portions are a lot smaller, probably half of what I used to eat and I'm still a chunk.

Sorry I can't offer you any help but I can offer my sympathy from someone else who all of a sudden inherited a weight gain gene!

Well that's interesting to hear about your chat with the GP,  Thumper. It us odd, isn't it? Going back a few years I remember having conversations with girlfriends who had various health conditions & the first thing their GP would say us that they needed to loose weight! What has changed, then?
But you have my sympathy right back, too. Last summer I had an awful virus & I barely ate for weeks, a bit like you, & I lost practically nothing too.
However, since posting last, we've visited our old neighbours both in their mid 70s. They'd lost quite a lot of weight & look great. They've been doing intermittent fasting. So hubby & I started that too. We eat between 1pm & 7pm and I've lost 4lbs already!!!
Can't quire believe it tbh. Hubby has lost more but men always seem to. This is the first time I've slipped below 12 stone in ages.
I know not everyone can fast but after the first 2 days we didn't feel hungry particularly. So whilst I'm still having a bit of pud or cake, my portion sizes are now smaller as I can't eat so much & it's happened quickly too. It suits me well because if I ever ate breakfast I'd over eat all day & in the evening the snacks always came out so it's helped with that.
If you can do it, perhaps give it a try. I'm pleasantly surprised. I know it'll be slower from here onwards as you always lose a lot in the first week - but even on low carbon I struggled to lose a pound.

Mrs Mitch and others

Only just caught up with this post,

I too have struggled with dieting and joined Slimming World and while worked to some degree, I started to feel that the sit round after and discussing what you had or not lost was distressing for me.  Can't really express my meaning - but it just didn't sit well with me.

Due to BP and knee problem I was sent to a Lifestyle and weight style programme which started in late June.

Not able due to high BP to excersise but allowed to go to the healthy eating part.  It is run by two Health Board Dieticans in line with physio exercise (missed this)

None on the diet group mentallity - in week 10 and I have lost 7 kilos - learnt alot about portion size and basically getting a bit more active ( me it's an extra walk with my dog per day).   You can be weighed if you want and no ones cares if you don't.
Honestly the folk in the group have turned up each week,,,,mostly in 50, 60, 70 year old bracket.  If its run by your health board - theres no charge and runs for 12 weeks and you can go back every 8weeks for catch up.

Plus side was yesterday GP has stopped my BP meds to see how I go without, have to record reading and she will see how it goes. ( too high and must be seen)
