Morning all,
Well my 4 day break of progesterone has resulted in a huge heavy flooding period even though I’ve been back on P for three days. I tried to switch from cyclical p to a more continuous cycle mainly to see if it would help with 1. heavy flow and 2. Hair falling out in masses since starting Hrt 4 months ago.
I don’t think Hrt is suiting me. I removed my evorel patch in fear this morning from the amount I’m losing.
Can anyone please advise on alternatives to oestrogen patches and Uterogestan for peri menopause. I’ve heard there is a combined pill, but I’m turning 47 and overweight. Or going with the mini pill? Or a more natural approach

Just to add, the coil is not an option for me. I had a terrible reaction to insertion and had to remove immediately

You can use the mini pill and hrt together which should lessen and eventually stop the bleeding.

I'd suggest you look into the synthetic progestins for HRT use. These are more effective at completely stopping bleeding than utrogestan is.

You may need to trial a few. Like Pixie says you can also take a POP mini pill alongside your utrogestan. This is licensed anyway for contraceptive purposes during peri-menopause. Desogestrel, for eg, is a strong progestin which stop bleeding. (Did for me, over 10 years on it for endometriosis.)

You should also test your ferritin because this will likely be low if you are bleeding this heavily and weirdly low ferritin can in turn cause bleeding to be heavier, so you lose more, and it is lower... and then you go round and round. Conversely improving ferritin can stop the heavy bleeding as well. Ferritin should be over 100, don't let anyone tell you less is okay... not even a doctor.

You can use the combined pill continuously like I do and have no periods at all!

Nobody has to bleed in 2025 unless they want to!

It is licensed for contraceptive use until 50 in the UK, however therapeutic use ie to treat a condition is an individual clinical decision thereafter.

I plan to be on it until I am around 55 and menopause can reasonably be assumed.

There is also (off label) 150mcg of desogestrel daily - supported by the FSRH for menstrual suppression and by the BMS as endometrial protection alongside your estrogen of choice.
