DH has an infection so having swallowed 2 Paracetamol at 5.00 he was able to C a Nurse this evening for discussion . Prescribed a 7-day Course of ABs - she happened to mention that men need 7 days whereas women 3  .  He has to take a sample back 2 days after finishing the Course.

From start to finish the whole thing took 60 mins., from speaking to our local surgery, getting the appt. and taking the script to the Pharmacy.

I looked on the Notice Board and there is no mention of menopause.  I have 2 books written by Jane Lewis so I plan to make an appt to C the Practice Manager for a Talk ;-).

This is appalling I have an embedded infection which I have been battling for 7 years because of the 3 days course they are giving women! Woman are being let down as 3 days will not get rid of infection dogs/cats get 7/14 days. This has become a serious problem and epidemic waiting to happen.

It's lack of education overall with medics not thinking to follow up information.  Little joined up thinking as to whether ABs are required for women as well as wondering why women return when symptoms don't improve: is it infection or VA.

CLKD,  am I understanding correctly your DH has a urine infection? If so, and you may already be aware of this, in men of a certain age, a urine infection is often a sign of prostatitis. My hubby had this about 10 years ago and it was horrendous. In spite of ABs for 7 days, the infection got worse and he ended up with chills then pouring with sweat and his whole body was shaking all over in bed and he couldn't get warm.
The surgery was sending off samples every week and just re prescribing the same ABs. After about 6 weeks of this, we changed GPs prior to moving house and the new GP had to do a house call to us for my dad, who we cared for, (it was his practice). My husband mentioned his stubborn infection and it turned out he was very knowledgeable about prostatitis and recognised it as that straight away. He gave 3 courses of 3 different ABs and a month later all symptoms were gone. He told us he had one patient who'd had it for 10 years and knew of another who'd had it around 20!!
Apparently it's crucial if the infection doesn't go after 1st course, the right treatment is essential.
Don't want to alarm you but this GP said men rarely get UTIs unless STD or prostatitis.
Hopefully the AB will do the trick for your DH and if I've got the wrong end of the stick, ignore all of the above 😆

My father-in-law had this twice, when quite elderly, both times he ended up in hospital.

   I wasn't aware so that's something to be aware of: he had the chills for about an hour after taking Paracetamol B4 seeing the Nurse Practitioner- 1hr .30 after DH decided at 5.00 p.m. that he 'might have a urine infection'  last Friday.  ABs seem to have worked, as well as 2-3 days of Paracetamol kept any temp down. ::  e.Coli was diagnosed - he will put a clean sample in on Monday and has a phone consult with the surgery pharmacist 3 days after that.

What's quite elderly Aprilflower    I have to B careful when complaining about other 'elderly drivers' 'cos we both qualify now  .  There isn't a legal age for elderly which is why we get upset when we get SAGA information through the post  .

May I ask what antibiotic cured your embedded UTI? 

Unfortunfortunately I’m still battling this embedded infection it can take years to get rid of. Once the infection gets embedded in the bladder it is very hard to treat and get rid of.

Thank you very much for your reply Donna-Paul.  Was hoping you had found some magic.
I took an antibiotic for 10 days and felt better while on it but off of it  UTI like symptoms returning though I am not sure if its actually an infection causing the UTI like burning.  I use Vagifem every 3 days.
When others say VA mimics UTI I am wondering in exactly what way does it mimic?  I understand about the awful vaginal pain but UTI is usually pain when urinating.  Does VA cause that too?
