Alcohol and heartbeat
« on: February 20, 2025, 07:16:15 PM »

Hi all,
Been a whole since I've posted but have checked in a few times.

I seem to have quite an intolerance to alcohol now. For a few years I've had a fast heart rate at night if I had a lot to drink. I wouldn't be able to sleep, felt cold and my hear would feel like it's beating out of my chest (even though it often would only be in the 80s)

Now it seems I can't have a couple of drinks before this happens.

It's terrifying.

Alcohol usually causes dehydration which then causes fast heart rate. When I drink alcohol, usually wine, I make sure I also drink plenty of water especially before going to bed. As I've got older I'm not able to drink as much as I used to so a glass or two with my evening meal is it now.

I was getting loads of those extra beats for a long time and they got really bad late last year. I figured something is causing my heart to be over stimulated so decided to cut out wine altogether. I used to have at least a glass a day. It was like a light switch going off, since I cut the wine out, the extra beats have disappeared, so yes alcohol is mos definitely a stimulant and well worth trying to cut back & see if it helps.

I find now I can't tolerate as much alcohol as I used to. I only drink wine, but I find now any more than a glass at a time doesn't agree with me. Good in a way. 5 years ago I was very down with losing dad and drinking more than I should. I don't have the problem you describe, but it is your body's way of telling you that what you could get away with in your twenties you can't do in your forties and fifties.

Yes, it's a shame as it can happen with 2 drinks. I'm not a big drinker but I like a couple of drinks with friends occasionally.
