Newbie... does it ever end?
« on: January 24, 2025, 12:15:40 PM »

Hello everyone

So pleased I found this site after much fearful Dr Googling (why do we do it!?)

Thought I'd say hello rather than just lurk and read!

I'm 47 and have been like clockwork all my (period) life. Have noticed a few possible/probably peri symptoms in the last year (anxiety through the roof out of nowhere when normally very calm and logical, ITCHY skin, Oh the itchy skin that you want to take a cheese grater to, and some periods where I flooded when I never have before, plus the hormonal bi-polar mood swings which I've also not had until now)
Last period was on time but soooo light it was barely there which isn't like me  :o
It stopped at usual time for 3 days and then helllooooo spotting.
Have now been spotting/light bleeding on/off ever since (a couple of weeks now) and next period is due in 5 days so I feel like I'll go straight into the next one (sigh!)
I have started Health and Her Peri supplements and take Flurodix for iron replacement for now.
I am reading a lot on here about women in similar unsettling experience and I have a Dr. appt next week to check things, but is this "normal" sign of heading towards meno?
Clearly, I will be getting checked and next smear is due this year with no prior issues. I'm logically thinking it's just the start of this journey but the anxiety monster I have become is already thinking the worst!
Also, I am worried about taking anything to stop it as after I had my son, I had Depro jab and bled permanently!  :-\ Every pill I've tried has same result, I just don't stop so they don't suit anymore.
Worrying that Dr is going to suggest HRT or pill and I'll just continue to bleed anyway if I'm given that. Hoping there are other ways?

Nobody has to bleed unless they want to, and you have tons of options.

First of all I wouldn't write off all types of combined pill. The main reason for bleeding on the pill is taking it for only 3 weeks out of 4. Taken continuously ie active pills every day no dummy pills or hormone free interval, most women achieve amenorrhea after a few months to a year.

There is also the mirena IUS, which has most women bleed free after the first 6-12 months (and can be used alongside your estrogen of choice in peri/menopause)

Endometrial ablation is also an option, although this is more indicated for heavy bleeding rather than just nuisance spotting.

Alternatively taking a double dose of the progestin only pill cerazette (ie 150mcg) daily can generally shut an elephant down, as can oral medroxyprogesterone acetate.

Note that these two would render you hypoestrogenic by shutting down ovulation, so estrogen replacement should be strongly considered.

There are also menopause hormone therapy options but these are unlikely to solve the problem of bleeding and may exacerbate it (although both these and the combined pill confer many other benefits in terms of quality of life and future health).

Morning.   MayB it's time to stop 'alternatives' and get a full blood count to include VitD, iron levels and thyroid function tests.  taking iron for example long term without supervision may cause more problems than it might solve.

Browse round.   Make notes.  Some find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary of use.  Let us know how you get on.

Don't let any medic suggest that you are 'too young' or because you 'aren't having fliushes' that you 'cant be in peri' ;-)

Thank you for the replies and the advice.
Haven’t been using “alternatives” just thought it might be time to take them anyway whilst I wait for my Dr appointment to come round.
Definitely would like to stop the bleeding so open to trying something, just didn’t want to add to the problem with a pill when I’ve had nothing but issues on that path before (but it’s good to hear there are other options too)
My biggest concern was “is this normal” but from looking at other threads here it seems a number of us get this. Just need to check in with the Dr now to make sure there’s no underlying issues

Thanks again and will let you know how it goes with the Dr
