Worried about side effects with mirena coil
« on: January 23, 2025, 03:01:29 PM »

Hi I’m new to the forum but enjoying the good advice. I’m 47 and was on evorel sequi for a year, after finding a lump in my breast I was told to discontinue it. The lump was just a cyst so I went back onto the same patches as they were working great (relieved my hot flushes, anxiety, insomnia etc) but after a few months I kept getting break through bleeding so tried Utrogestan which made me completely exhausted so went back onto the patches but after 6 or 7 months I noticed a lot of hair shedding. So I stopped them 6 months ago but my mood and aches and pains are awful so thinking in going back on hrt but wondering whether to try the mirena coil, my concern is that I’ve heard it’s painful to have fitted then what happens if it doesn’t agree with me and have to have it removed, just so confused.

Hi Clara 5,
I had the Mirena coil fitted a year and a half ago after having a lot of trouble with bleeding on HRT due to not absorbing Utrogestan well (I am 8 years post meno).  It was uncomfortable but not painful having it fitted by the menopause nurse at our surgery.  She is excellent and answered all of my questions (I had a lot) before fitting it.  She said ideally give it six months to settle down but that if it really wasn't suiting me before then, it could be removed, no problem.

I had some initial cramps in the first few weeks and some slight bleeding but by three months it was pretty much settled for me and I've had no bleeding since.  I did have some increase in hair shedding a few months after it was fitted (not sure if it was related to the Mirena or just stress) but that's stopped (I take Hairburst capsules, which for me have helped my hair grow, strengthen and generally be in better condition). I do still have slightly tender breasts which I can live with, which only started after the Mirena had been in place for a few months.  Apparently this can be a side effect and they've been checked and all OK.

I know if doesn't work for everyone but for me, it's been great.  Good luck with whatever you decide to do  :)

Thank you so much for your reply, that’s very reassuring. It’s difficult with the hair loss on evorel sequi because it happened a few months after starting a new job so not sure if it was due to that stress or patches. That’s helpful about the hair supplement too thank you.

Hi my gp wants me to have a coil too, but because i have had spotting after the menopause and i am worried too after reading many horror stories, i have a hystoscope soon just to rule out any other reason, but gp is certain it is due to progestrone levels

I don't get on with utro either. I spent a long time debating getting a mirena because of the time lag getting it removed if I didn't get on with it. It's been a couple of months now and it's great. Still get a bit of blood occasionally but mostly not. Wish I'd tried it sooner.

I changed to a coil after bleeding episodes on Conti about a year ago.

I no longer get any bleeding. I also don't seem to get any side effects from it.

Obviously everyone is different but I wish I had done it sooner.

Thanks for that. There certainly does seem to be plenty of positive experiences. I think for me it’s just the thought of it perhaps being complicated to stop it (having to have it removed) if it doesn’t suit me, still on the fence but definitely more likely to consider it now.

If it is put in, it can be removed.

Perhaps have a word with your surgery. Many have a nurse who can remove it pretty quickly.
