Itchy skin. Too much estrogen?
« on: January 21, 2025, 09:33:36 PM »

Hello. Can too much estrogen cause itching? I increased my Sandrena from 1.5mg to 2mg 4 months ago due to hot flushes. That helped pretty quickly but now I'm about to claw myself to death. My legs, stomach and scalp are so itchy. I've also had more bloating since the increase and I've gained a lot of weight which had previously never been an issue. I did have the itchy skin pre hrt years ago but I'd be surprised if it my levels were too low. Last bloods 8 months ago were 302 on the 1.5mg dose. Wonder if I need to drop back down to 1.5 again? I'm just dreading the return of the sweats 😰.

Have you tried an antihhistimine?

I use allevia when the itching from my patches gets too bad, usually settles it down, I think it's a combination of meds, the body just says, ""Enough!"

Usually itching is due to oestrogen levels dropping.

Maybe Peach8 reduce back to 1.5mg ?  Slowly?  Have U gained weight or has your shape altered?

There are other medications that may help with flushes.

Yes, it doesn't help unfortunately. It's always worse at night for some reason. Been on hrt for 4 years, had itching prior to that but not again until now. The only thing I can think might be the cause is increasing the estrogen 4 mo the ago.

I've put on weight and it's very noticeable. Most of it has been since increasing the gel yet I've been told by meno specialists that hrt doesn't cause weight gain.

What have U decided 2 do?

Parts of me look as though I have gained weight but it's middle aged spread  ::) in that my belly has drooped.  Looking down wards I look fat  :( but laying flat all is OK  ;).

If it was the estrogen you would have been itching most of your life.

Lack of estrogen (and androgens) can cause dry itchy skin.

It could be one of the excipients in the gel not the actual estrogen.

However if there is persistent unexplained itching and weight gain I would see your GP - blood tests may be advisable to check for liver and kidney conditions, diabetes etc.

This is definitely all over weight/fat gain.  I've always been pretty lean so this is a bit of a struggle.

I think I'll reduce the dose for a couple of weeks and see what happens even if it's just to rule it out. If I keep scratching like this I'll soon be thinner anyway 😂

I've just had a lot of blood work due to an unrelated issue, everything came back normal so I think (hope) there's no issue there. I'll see how it goes, might need to see gp anyway if it persists. I pay privately  for meno care and can't afford another appointment just now.

Have U tried a good hand/body lotion for those itchy areas?  I find that 'nivea' or Vaseline in the yellow bottle really good because I don't itch all. over.  Initially it was the back of my neck; mainly my insteps as I stepped into the bath; now it's kind of random  ::)
