AMH test on HRT
« on: January 20, 2025, 07:17:31 PM »

Hello!

I have been thinking about taking an AMH test so see what my egg reserve is; likely very low but I'm interested.

All the tests say to stop taking hormonal birth control before taking a test but does that include HRT?

As long as you are not on a suppressive progestin this should not interfere with the AMH.

Birth control shuts down ovulation, keeping the remaining ovarian follicles quiet and small so AMH is artificially lowered, but body identical estradiol and micronised progesterone in typically prescribed doses do not cause this.

However the clinical utility of AMH in someone with ovarian aging advanced enough to require menopause hormone therapy is questionable unless there were special circumstances such as POI or young women with chemotherapy etc.

Thanks bombshell!

Yes, I'm looking at a POI diagnosis.

Symptoms started at 32. I'm on HRT now but I'm curious about whether AMH could offer more information.

FSH was at 23 18 months ago before HRT.

That's really helpful. Thank you!

I'm sorry you are going through this at a young age.

AMH is only really of any clinical value for fertility reasons such as if you are considering an IVF attempt with your own eggs.

Is there a particular question you are hoping it could answer? Usually young women with POI are seen in a specialist clinic and various tests are done including genetics to identify any particular cause, as well as bone density etc. They would usually be able to refer you to a fertility centre if required to discuss treatment options.

Have you had this type of appointment?
