Severe Joint Pain and Stiffness
« on: January 18, 2025, 01:49:31 PM »

Hi Ladies - Just looking for a bit of advise. Have severe joint paid and stiffness, especially wrists, hands and lower back. Now aged 60 (feeling 80!) came off HRT around 10 months ago after 7 years, flushes back to start with but last couple of weeks these have decreased and the joint issues are far worse. Any advise would be appreciated.

Hi!  R U able to explain why U stopped HRT?  How was it helping over all?

As oestrogen levels drop muscles may become lax = aches and pains.  Also the body may become dry, inside and out.

Hi - due to having breast condition LCIS, consultant advised better to stop HRT due to the increased risk I have of BC.

I'm not sure what 'LCIS' might be  :-\

Hi,
I've also had joint probs - especially hands & feet - & been on HRT for 5 yrs.
I'm no medic, but just sharing what has really helped for me: daily turmeric and chondroitin/glucosamine.
I'm not sure which is really working (or maybe it's even placebo) but it has made a big difference.
I was plagued by bad hand pain which has now been gone for 5 months

LCIS is lobular carcinoma in situ, it’s not breast cancer but there is a higher risk for BC in the future - picked up when having biopsy for calcifications on mammogram - this condition does not show up so completely incidental, hence the advise to stop HRT if possible.
I take turmeric and menopace but glucosamine seem to upset my stomach, think I need a new body!  :)

Have you looked into any of the SERMs like tibolone, bazedoxifene, tamoxifen or raloxifene?

Also is risk reducing mastectomy not an option?

I had BRRM at 29 due to having 7 affected relatives. I don't recall what my actual risk was calculated as (genetic testing was not available then - I subsequently tested negative) but it may not have been that much higher than someone with an actual premalignant lesion.

It is a low risk procedure that has given me immeasurable peace of mind over the years and being breast free means I have zero fear of hormone therapy.

Whilst not everyone would choose it, I feel really strongly that women at increased risk, suffering psychological distress or having access to hormone therapy jeopardised by their breast cancer risk should be made aware of the option and get to make an informed choice.

I wonder how many women are told that they cannot take HRT due to 'a risk'  >:(

LCIS is not a reason to discontinue HRT, for goodness' sake. I am so fed up of uneducated doctors causing unending suffering.

Look up the podcast called 'Keeping Abreast' which is all about BC (of all kinds) and breast issues and also HRT.

And get a copy of the book called 'Estrogen Matters' by Bluming which covers the BC subject in depth and explains why HRT does NOT cause BC and in fact the estrogen component of it is PROTECTIVE against BC. Fewer women on E only got BC in the WHI than women not on any HRT!!

Please educate yourselves and don't rely on misinformation from doctors who know f-all about all this. Your lives are far more valuable than a few minutes of off the cuff advice from a doctor who hasn't bothered to keep up to date on CPD and HRT issues.

I also gave up HRT after an LCIS diagnosis. After two years of suffering and reading Estrogen Matters, I went back on HRT in January. My body feels so much better!!!!!! My joints have stopped aching and I can move (walk, dance, exercise) like a normal person. LCIS requires closer screening. I had an MRI in December that was clear which made my decision to return to HRT easier. I have an ultrasound coming in March to check that things are still clear. For women with dense breast tissue, multiple complicated cysts, and LCIS, everything can seem scary. ❤️

Nancy, there is a great podcast you might want to check out called 'Keeping Abreast' - about new angles on all this, including breast health, imaging, HRT after BC etc.

Nancy5678 - can I ask what regime you are on? And whether you had to have MRI privately, I have just been offered a mammogram annually. Really confused with it all, my mum was on HRT until the age of 70 when diagnosed with BC, including LCIS. If I do go back on it, need a progesterone that doesn’t make me feel like I have been wired! Thank you ladies for all the help.
