New member bleeding on HRT
« on: January 08, 2025, 01:03:32 PM »

Hi, I started HRT 2-3 years after my last period aged 58. I was put on 1.0 mg Sandra gel and a 100mg capsule of progesterone. From the start I had regular bleeding about every 24 days. Very light. I changed to Conti 70mg/7mg patches but still had bleeding.
After about 16 months I was referred for an ultrasound which was fine other than a uterus lining thickness of 6mm. A GP phoned me on Christmas Eve to say I had a referral for an urgent biopsy to rule out pre-cancerous cells. I was told to stop the HRT then review it after the results. A few days later I spoke to another GP who said my referral was not urgent. She advised me to go back on my original HRT but with double the progesterone. My biopsy appointment is in March. I haven’t gone back on HRT yet as I’d like to see if the bleeding reoccurs. I had a withdrawal bleed for 3 days after stopping on Dec 24 but nothing at all since. My question is whether I still need a biopsy if the bleeding completely stops or whether I should request a repeat of the ultrasound. The second GP said the biopsy should happen just in case but she thought the bleeding was due to the HRT progesterone dose.  I’d be grateful for any advice. I had 3 children by caesarian over 26 years ago and no gynaecological issues ever. I’d be grateful for any advice.

:welcomemm: I do wish that medics would get their heads around what needs referral and what can be a 'watch and wait'  ::)

Hopefully some1 will be along with advice.  Browse round.

Officially, you should have the biopsy.

It may be difficult to get your prescriptions continued if you decline this, if someone decides to be a real b* about it.

However if it were me, or anyone I cared about, and it has stopped with an increased dose of progesterone, and the lining was only 2 MILLIMETRES above normative limits based on women without HRT, I would much rather just have a routine follow up ultrasound, as long as this wasn't a deal-breaker to get my prescription continued.
