I am post menopausal and aged 56. I am on evoril conti HRT patches . I have had few instances of bleeding with stomach cramps like a period . I went to doctor and had ultrasound which showed endometrium at 6mm. These bleeds have now happened 3 times since 8/12. I am terrified of endometrial cancer . Been told to come off HRT straight away and await referral to hospital for further tests . Has anyone else experienced same  . Thank you

This is extremely unlikely to be anything sinister.

Your endometrium is two MILLIMETRES above the normative value based on women NOT taking any hormonal therapy.

Acceptable limits for women on hormone therapy have not been defined, however some of the most experienced specialists have postulated limits from 8 to 11 millimetres.

Unfortunately the NHS is still working to cutoffs based on a completely hormone starved and atrophic uterus.

Bleeding causes so much unnecessary fear - it is extremely common on HRT because the organ is simply doing what it is intended to do when stimulated by hormones.

Less than 1 percent of endometrial biopsies in women on HRT are pathological, and combined HRT with progestin such as you are on leads to a LOWER risk of endometrial cancer than in untreated women.

However, for peace of mind following your investigations, I would suggest a mirena IUS going forward. This is kryptonite to endometrial cancer - they are even using it to treat early stage endometrial cancer!

Rationally I know you are most likely right but just can’t help worrying myself .

Will try to stop until tests done .

Hi, yes this time last year I had a lining of 8mm and heavy bleeding,  I was on oestrogel and utrogestan at that time and was told to stop taking like you...which I did...it seems some health trusts recommend stopping HRT whilst investigations are carried out and some don't. It took about 6 weeks for my hysteroscopy/biopsy to be carried out under GA and then the results....by that time I decided to stay off HRT altogether and have never taken it since. Purely an individual choice and I would never preach to anyone else....everyone is different x

Hi thanks for your reply. I am glad all was well . I have been off HRT for  a week now and feeling okay but a little more bleeding which I’m trying to put down to coming off HRT though not sure how long it takes to come out of my system .

It’s nice to know someone else who has been through same

I had exactly the same 6mm lining and was referred for a hysteroscopy and they found a 1cm poly which they removed and sent off which came back fine

I am glad all is well . Thanks for reassurance .

I have been off HRT now for 12 days and feel absolutely fine thank goodness. Just need to wait for an appointment

I am no good at waiting at the best of times !

Is it really necessary to stop HRT?  After all with the state of the. NHS, U may be waiting months or have appts postponed
