I have been having erratic periods since December 2022 and hot flashes started about a year ago. I have been suffering with symptoms for a while and had enough and had a gp appointment. I had blood tests and from this he has said I am post menopause?? My last period was very heavy in September 2024. I thought you had to be 1 year without a period to be post menopause? Have I been in menopause and didn’t realise and now I’m post menopause? I’m so confused. Also I can not have HRT as I have protein s blood problems which increase risk of clots by 10 times. Has anyone else been told they’re post menopause when they thought they were perimenopausal? Thanks x

It's completely arbitrary.

Menopause is defined as 12 months bleed free without another explanation.

Nothing magical happens on that day, and you are clearly suffering from the effects of ovarian hormone decline based on your symptoms.

In fact most of the bone loss and metabolic changes probably occur before the last period, so it is perfectly valid to seek treatment rather than waiting.

What if you have 11 months then a period, and the same again? So what?!

It is not correct that women with thrombophilias cannot have hormone therapy.

Transdermal estrogen has no increased risk of blood clots.

Alternatively you could be anticoagulated and take whatever hormone therapy you wanted.

It is something you should discuss with a specialist before assuming there's no treatment for you.

Thank you for your reply. I just was shocked that I was post menopause thinking I was perimenopausal. I’m waiting for a hospital referral to discuss my options and have been given vitamin d and calcium supplements. I’m also taking health and her supplements too. As well as antidepressants and b12 3 monthly injections for pernicious anemia. All these tablets and injections  wow. It’s tough getting older lol 😂

Hi emily  :welcomemm: I was told by my GP that my FSH result showed I was post menopausal after I'd not had a period for five months. I then went back to a fairly regular cycle for over a year while experiencing really debilitating hot flushes/sweats. I began HRT then (aged 53) so have no idea when I would have actually become post menopausal using the 'one year without a natural period' marker. Blood tests to ascertain menopause stage seem unreliable.

I'm sure you'll find lots of support on here. Please let us know how you get on at the hospital appointment.

Thanks Taz. That’s really helpful to me. I feel so alone sometimes with all this. I can talk to family and my partner but feel like I’m a moaner getting on their nerves. This probably isn’t the case but it’s how I feel so I don’t really mention it. I’m sure this forum will help me x :)

:welcomemm: you moan away, we're hear to listen.

Menopause = last bleed.  Ever. At no particular age.  Nature may throw in a curved ball - any unexplained bleeding should be checked.

Broswe round.  Make notes.  Some find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary of use.

Hi I am new to this site my first post, I started hrt in march last year was put on everol conti straight away although I was peri so had some breakthrough bleeding and one heavy bleed remained on this for 6 months as all other symptoms disappeared, gp changed me to fem7 which lasted 4 weeks as I was unable to function on them anxiety which I had never suffered with. Next stop was lanzetto spray and progesterone capsules for 8 weeks the progesterone made me very nauseous and was wretching constantly lost weight as no appetite at all.  At my request I went back on to original patch everol conti as I felt ok on this, it’s been 4 weeks now and I can go 10-12 days feeling great then have a couple of really off tummy/nausea wanted to know if this was normal? GP been great I also questioned why I had been given post menopause patches several times and seemingly guide lines ok this for my age 55 as my periods would be ready to stop around this age, have researched and seems quite common. Wondered if anyone else has this experience so sporadically. Sorry for drawn out post. The nausea floors me when it hits then can just go out of nowhere.  Hormones 😡

Me too - nausea = panic attacks  :'( :-\

Hev01 - R your symptoms cyclical?  Some find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary of use to chart progress as well as telling us that there R better days  ::)

As for periods stopping around 55 ...........  :-\ I'm sure that some1 will be along with more info on this idea.

Very hard to say if it’s cyclical as my periods were a little erratic before patches, feel like my body is crying out for a full bleed but maybe I’m wrong.  It’s the sporadic days of nausea that floor me not knowing when they will come  😩  just knowing I am not on my own with symptoms is reassurance thankyou, anxiety only comes with the nausea too it’s like I am overthinking and waiting for it to happen
