Utrogestan and insomnia anyone?
« on: December 16, 2024, 12:57:21 PM »

Hi,

I read so many post here from women who have a good experience with Utrogestan, helps them sleep, etc. But I have the opposite experience. If I take 200 mg orally on days 14 + I get rage, PMS XXL, panic, agitation, and insomnia with restless leg (RLS). So I take 100 mg vaginally, and this is better. But even so it makes my insomnia much worse, and brings intrusive thoughts and panic at night and RLS.

Does anyone else find progesterone toxic?

Yes, some people do get a paradoxical reaction to utrogestan.

You could consider getting a Mirena coil which has a tiny progestin dose which mostly stays local to the uterus and doesn't often cause systemic effects.

Thanks Joziel,  I had a Mirena years ago and I bled all the time, felt super depressed.

That's a shame. You could try other progestins. Here's the BMS document which lists all of them:

Hi Aubrey - yes! Utrogestan and insomnia - no idea why it doesn’t seem to get any airtime when it’s so totally the opposite of the sedative effect that we’re warned about.

When I started on 200mg oral at night as prescribed, I only lasted 2 nights. No sleep at night, totally wired, then exhausted in the day. Had to stop as was driving a long distance and didn’t feel safe! Re-started a week later and tried taking 100mg instead just to get used to it but was in some kind of zen-like zombie state half the time and floods of tears the rest of the time.

I asked for advice on another forum (and this one too I think) and was relieved to hear of other experiences. Best advice was either switch to vaginal insertion or take orally in the morning.

I switched to vaginal and did that sequentially for 15 months approx but towards the end was noticing low mood during the two weeks of taking it.

This week have switched to 100mg oral in morning (lower dose because going to continuous 25/3) with gp agreement.

Doing good so far.

So yes it can cause insomnia and you can take orally in the morning instead or switch to vaginal insertion. Sorry if it’s too much info but I feel strongly about wanting others to know it doesn’t always have a sedative effect!! Hope that helps, any questions let me know, I’ll try to follow the post if I can remember how!

Sorry in my excitement i forgot you said you’re already taking vaginally. So can try orally in the morning? Good luck

Thanks Seemster, and a Happy New Year. Your reaction to it seems as bad as mine. Thanks for sharing.
