On HRT, bleeding post-hysteroscopy, symptoms confusing
« on: December 02, 2024, 09:01:57 PM »

Hello lovely folk out there,

Wondering if I can pick your brains.

I've been using an HRT combination of mirena coil, oestrogel (three pumps daily) and testosterone gel for around four years with no problems, but started to bleed intermittently earlier this year.

A scan revealed a thickened womb lining. I had a hysteroscopy in September. I had a few polyps (which were removed) and fibroids. My mirena coil was changed. The biopsy was clear (phew!). I bled for a couple of weeks after the op. I had some spotting on the odd day after that.

However, daily bleeding started again about a week ago. It's light but persistent. I'm also experiencing vaginal itching and getting acne, which suggests that I'm not getting enough oestrogen. I'm confused by my symptoms. If I'm bleeding then that suggests I'm getting too much oestrogen (overgrowth of womb lining), yet if I'm itching and getting acne, that suggests too little.

I will contact my gynae this week to discuss but wonder if anyone else has any similar experiences. Should I be worrying? How would you interpret my symptoms?

Very grateful for your always helpful advice.

Thank you x

Do you still have the fibroids? They can cause bleeding.

Not having enough oestrogen can give you v light bleeding too

Thank you sheila99. I do still have them and didn't know this. I thought it was the polyps that caused the bleeding. This is helpful to know. Thank you!

I had a helpful note from Ebonybones which I've accidentally deleted (doh). She suggested that too little oestrogen might be the problem.

This is also really helpful. I had thought that this might be going on due to the vaginal itchiness, but I was worried because I'd been diagnosed with uterine thickening (which I understand is caused by oestrogen) which is why I'd had the hysteroscopy. So it all seemed a bit confusing.

I also had my Mirena coil replaced when I had the hysteroscopy so I guess that might be settling in a bit too.

Hello ladies.

I am not a medical professional but I believe that fibroids can cause bleeding because they  increase the surface area of the womb meaning there is more uterine lining to shed.

I think it is common knowledge that fibroids are fed by oestrogen but the small one I had disappeared even after starting HRT.

I hope this is helpful ladies and take care.

This is very helpful Kathleen. Thank you. I was beginning to wonder whether fibroids/polyps might be a side effect of HRT and that I had to learn to live with/manage them. I had a scan yesterday and an appointment with a great gynaecologist (member of the Kings’ team) and he put my mind to rest. Said that these weren’t necessarily connected to HRT so I could be dealing with them anyway.
