Mirena severe insomnia
« on: November 17, 2024, 08:32:04 AM »

Wondering if anyone else has experienced severe insomnia with Mirena? At first all was good, but 6 weeks after fitting the insomnia started and it has got worse for the last 3 weeks, to the point where I’m hardly sleeping at all. Having had insomnia from Utrogestan I was hoping the Mirena would be the answer.

Currently on 3ish pumps of Oestrogel, I tried cutting it down last night by half a pump but that made it worse.
Not sure what to do now, I can’t carry on much longer like this.
I want to use a lower risk non- oral progesterone
Would consider a patch instead but they only come in 50 mcg strength which is equivalent to 2 pumps oestrogel.

Any help gratefully received!
I’m 51 and still having periods

Thanks x

Insomnia can be from oestrogen deficiency too. Might be worth seeing if an increase helps.

Thanks Sheila. Just a bit nervous to go up to 4 pumps as earlier in the year as it gave me fast heart rate problems.
But I will maybe try that, thanks.
I may also try splitting the gel dose perhaps

Had you tried using the utrogestan vaginally?

Regarding the combined patch, you can wear two of them if you need to. This keeps the same E to P ratio the same.

Alternatively, and this should only be done with specialist supervision, some people top up the combined patch with gel or an additional low dose estrogen only patch.

This does alter the E to P ratio so you would need to monitor endometrial thickness.

Thanks for your suggestions bombsh311

Yes I used it vaginally for quite a while but it didn’t help.

I’ll persevere with Mirena for now, useful to know about those options with patches though.
