VA slowly getting better
« on: November 08, 2024, 09:32:23 PM »

Hello, thank you to everyone that posts here, it has helped me feel much better.  I thought I was the only one that was suffering from this terrible itching. I'm 69 and never imagined that this was caused by lack of oestrogen when my menopause was almost 20 years ago. I was frightened to use oestrogen as my mother died of cancer of the uterus. I became suicidal and so thought I may as well try using Estriol cream. I have been using it for three months now and things are slowly improving. Other things that help me were sitz baths in warm water, not hot be careful as what feels Ok to your hand is too hot for your vulva. Bathe for about 10 to 15 mins twice a day.  I could not use toilet paper so used cotton hankies and washed them in simple soap and rinsed well.  Double rinsed my cotton undies.  In the shower I found Canesfresh soothing gel wash was the only thing I could tolerate. I do use a bamboo toilet paper now. I'm hoping that one day I'll be able to wear jeans again. Hope this helps someone.

Good that you are doing so well.
A physio mentioned to me that sitz baths help as the warmth brings blood rushing to the vulva area.  I find the cheapest (Tesco) toilet paper ok.
I kept a lot of jeans and trousers to a point where it was psychologically better to give them all to the charity shop. You may find at some point that that helps too.

Hello susanc and welcome to the forum.

Thank you for detailing everything you do to treat your vaginal atrophy.

I had an episiotomy when I had my daughter and the bidet in the hospital was heaven to use!

Talking of babies, we were told that dipping our elbows into the bath water was the best way of testing the temperature, maybe this would help when using the sitz bath.

Wishing you well.

thanks for the elbow tip  ;) Kathleen.
Clkd, I find the cream a bit irritating so sticking to every three days as a compromise between the insane itching of the dryness and the stinging of the cream but I'll bear your advice about using it every day in mind. thank you
Minus minnie thanks for tip about the Tesco toilet paper

I tried bamboo but it is too thin ;-).  I have found that KY Jelly is soothing as is LIVE yoghurt ;-)
